Pope Francis proclaimed 2024 as the Year of Prayer. This announcement took place during the Fifth Sunday of the Word of God, on January 21, 2024. But what exactly does this “Year of Prayer” mean, and what significance does it hold for Christians around the world? Let’s find out together.
An Important Proposal
After a year dedicated to reflecting on the documents and studying the fruits of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis proposed that 2024 be dedicated to prayer. In a letter addressed to the Pro-Prefect, His Excellency Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the Holy Father expressed his desire to create a “symphony” of prayer in preparation for the Jubilee. This invitation to devote ourselves to individual and communal prayer is a reminder of the centrality of spiritual life in Christian life.
The Centrality of Prayer
Prayer is a fundamental pillar in the life of every Christian. Through prayer, we enter into a relationship with God, listen to his voice, and worship the Creator. Throughout history, the Church has developed a rich tradition of forms of prayer, from litany prayers to meditations, from liturgical prayers to moments of contemplative silence. The Year of Prayer invites us to rediscover these different ways of communicating with God.
Editrice Shalom follows in the footsteps of this prayerful tradition, having published prayer books for over twenty years that embrace every form and need, in order to support everyone’s individual sensitivity.
It was founded as a publishing house that wished to recover all those prayers at risk of being lost, and it continues by offering a selection that is renewed year after year.

Pope Francis’s Words
Devoting an entire year to prayer is an idea that Pope Francis developed and prepared with care. In fact, between 2020 and 2021, he gave 38 catecheses on prayer during the Wednesday Audiences that range from prayers of praise to prayers of supplication, from the biblical tradition to the spiritual tradition, and from the Old Testament to the New Testament. In short, it is a true school of prayer where we can come together and resume our journey with the Lord. What better year than 2024 to take up this catechesis again and let ourselves be guided by the Holy Father’s warm and incisive words.

Prayer as a Thirst for God
In a world that is often distracted and hectic, the Year of Prayer invites us to recover the desire to remain in the presence of the Lord. Prayer becomes our thirst for God, our longing to encounter him in the silence of our hearts. Pope Francis urges us to pray not only for ourselves, but also for others, for the Church, and for the whole world. Prayer thus becomes an act of love and universal communion.
The Year of Prayer is therefore an opportunity to rediscover the beauty and depth of spiritual life. We invite everyone to take part in this “symphony” of prayer, to seek moments of silence and listening, and to pray with an open heart. May this year lead us toward greater intimacy with God and more authentic communion with our brothers and sisters in faith.
