There are very many - and much-loved - saints whom the Church remembers this month, including Saint Teresa of Calcutta (September 5); Saint Joseph of Cupertino (September 18); and Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (September 23).
Moreover, the holy archangels are celebrated in September (September 29): Pope Francis, speaking about this feast, said: βThe three archangels are before God; they are our companions because they share the same vocation in the mystery of salvation: to carry forward the mystery of salvation. They adore God, glorify God, and serve God.β And so βlet us simply pray to the three archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael: Michael, help us in the struggle; each person knows what struggle they are facing in their life today, each of us knows the main struggle, the one that puts salvation at risk. Help us, Gabriel, bring us news, bring us the good news of salvation, that Jesus is with us, that Jesus has saved us, and give us hope. Raphael, take us by the hand and help us on our journey so that we do not take the wrong path, so that we do not remain still: always moving forward, but helped by youβ (cf. Morning Meditation, September 29, 2017).
The feast of the holy archangels seems almost to usher us into the feast of October 2, the day on which the Church remembers the guardian angel: βSensing the presence of an angel is like feeling the wind all around you. You cannot actually see the wind, but you feel it, and you know it is thereβ (Saint Bernard of Clairvaux).
Let us live this month by taking part, day after day, in the celebration in heaven, rejoicing in the certainty that an angel is by our side to tell us that the Lord loves us and never leaves us alone.
