Exploring Umbria, a land of holiness

Saint Rita of Cascia

Umbria is a green “land of saints,” rich in spirituality. In every century, it has produced throngs of martyrs and saints, men and women who, guided by the Spirit and fully faithful to the Gospel, lived extraordinary lives, inspiring original forms of community life. Among them are Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica, Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi. Many women also originated in Umbria or lived in the region for a long time: in addition to those already mentioned, Saint Angela of Foligno, Saint Clare of Montefalco, Saint Rita of Cascia, Saint Veronica Giuliani, Blessed Mother Speranza, and others.

These saints are often associated with places where you can breathe the air of heaven and find peace and rest: in Assisi, the Sacred Convent and the Papal Basilica of Saint Francis, the Convent of the Porziuncola and the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels, the Protomonastery of the Poor Clares and the Basilica of Saint Clare, along with all the other Franciscan sanctuaries. In the Diocese of Orvieto-Todi, the Sanctuary of Merciful Love in Collevalenza and the Basilica of Saint Christina in Bolsena. The Sacred Speco of Narni and the Basilica of Saint Valentine in the Diocese of Terni. In Cascia, the Sanctuary and Monastery of Saint Rita, who lived here as a wife, mother, widow, and later as a nun.

The historic Abbey of Sassovivo and the Sanctuary of Saint Angela of Foligno in the diocese of the same name, the Church of Saint Francis in Gubbio... and the list could go on!

We invite you to discover this unique region to refresh your heart and spirit!
