Today, 11 February 2022 – the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lourdes – the World Day of the Sick, established by Saint John Paul II, marks its thirtieth anniversary. May this be an opportunity to give special attention to the sick in our homes and hospitals; fragile people toward whom we often feel helpless. Yet, as Pope Francis reminds us, something can always be done: draw near to them and turn toward them a gaze rich in mercy, capable of alleviating loneliness, fear, suffering, doubt, and anguish…
During the pandemic, we witnessed how precious the work of those who volunteer to care for the sick is: even simple gestures, such as bringing groceries and medicines, provided comfort and support to those who needed it. May the school of solidarity in which we found ourselves – perhaps even against our will – continue to be alive and vibrant in our daily lives, so that we do not miss opportunities to alleviate even just a “crumb” of suffering for those affected by illness.
As Pope Francis writes, for those who experience «fragility and suffering due to illness […] fear grows and questions multiply» (Message for the 30th World Day of the Sick). Thus, only love can overcome the fears generated by illness, and only an atmosphere of communion and solidarity can make the journey of those who suffer less arduous.
Therefore, let us not remain deaf to the cry for help of those who suffer and, sustained by the maternal embrace of Our Lady of Lourdes, let us ensure that this day marks a new beginning for bringing mercy into the lives of those beside us who are going through a time of trial.
PRAYER FOR THE
30TH WORLD DAY OF THE SICK
Merciful Father, source of life, guardian of the dignity of every person,
fill us with your mercy and grant that, walking together, we may bear witness to
your predilection for those who are rejected, suffering, and alone.
Always support doctors and nurses,
healthcare workers and all caregivers.
Lord Jesus, humbled and crucified,
guardian of human suffering,
teach us to serve and love every brother and sister.
You who experienced pain and abandonment,
accompany all the sick
and suffering in body and spirit
and teach us to discover your face in each of them.
Holy Spirit, our Paraclete,
guardian of humanity in need of care and love,
help our weakness and vulnerability,
receive our daily hardships and sufferings,
grant us the hope of a blessed encounter for eternity.
Mary, witness to suffering at the foot of the cross,
pray for us.
