From Death Row to the Sacred Heart of Jesus: The Redemption of Jacques Fesch

Death penalty

Today, on the International Day Against the Death Penalty, we want to tell you a story of redemption and hope: that of the Servant of God Jacques Fesch, a man who experienced a profound conversion on death row.

He found God on death row

The story of Jacques Fesch speaks to us of mercy and conversion. Sentenced to death for killing a police officer during a failed robbery attempt, he was guillotined in Paris on October 1, 1957. There is a precise turning point in his life that he described as follows: «It happened one evening, in my cell […]. For the first time in my life, I was truly suffering with rare intensity […]. And that was when a cry burst from my chest, a plea for help: “My God!”, and instantly, like a violent wind […], the Spirit of the Lord seized me by the throat». This is the moment when God touched Jacques Fesch’s heart. In him, an atheist, God’s grace suddenly broke in at a certain point. During the three years he spent on death row, in fact, he went from mocking the Catholic faith to weeping over his sins, begging his wife to forgive him and awaiting his execution as the day when he would meet Jesus. He came to write: «Now I know that everything is grace and that I am not heading toward death but toward life. There is no peace outside Jesus, and there is no salvation without Him. Every time I receive the Holy Host, my heart overflows with love and a hymn of thanksgiving rises from my lips. I will offer my death as a sacrifice, for those I love… and for those who hate me». His is a truly meaningful story, speaking to us not only of a total change of heart but also of a profound journey of faith.

«There are not two men in me:
the one from before and the one from after,
but one and only, the one
without realizing it,
was searching for and has now found».

Toward a world without the death penalty.

The death penalty is increasingly seen as a practice belonging to the past, a remnant of times when it was thought that only the utmost severity could guarantee security. Today, however, the Church invites us to look ahead, toward a justice that does not merely punish, but offers hope and redemption. Justice, while necessary for the good of society, cannot be separated from hope and redemption. Every person, even one who has committed the most serious crimes, retains until the last moment of their life the possibility of encountering God, recognizing their mistakes, and asking for forgiveness. Faith teaches us that no one is ever completely lost, and that divine mercy is infinite. It is precisely in this glimmer of hope that our trust is founded: human justice may judge, but only God has the power to redeem and transform a repentant heart.

The story of Jacques Fesch shows us how, even in the darkest place, such as Death Row, love and grace can transform a life. The journey toward a world without the death penalty is a challenge, but it is also a call to value the dignity of every human being, as the Gospel teaches us. Today, the Church is fighting to ensure that even those who have done wrong are never deprived of the possibility of redemption. What do you think? Do you know stories of people, or of saints, who found God’s Love and Grace in the dark twists and turns of life?
