The next Jubilee, called by Pope Francis, will take place in 2025 and will have hope as its theme (“Pilgrims of hope” is the title).
At the Holy Father’s request, preparation for this great event of the Church will begin this year, and 2023 will be dedicated to rediscovering the fundamental themes of the four constitutions of the Second Vatican Council.
The Dicastery for Evangelization, in collaboration with Editrice Shalom, has produced 34 short resources, written by experts in language understandable to everyone, to enable those who are not thoroughly familiar with the conciliar event to discover its teaching.
Pope Francis himself, in the introduction to the first volume in the series, states: «I place these agile and effective resources in the hands of all Christians, especially young people; they revisit the fundamental themes of the four conciliar constitutions. I hope they will be widely welcomed and bear good fruit for the renewal of communities».

The Jubilee is a special year of grace, during which the Church invites the faithful to conversion and offers them the opportunity to request a plenary indulgence, that is, remission of sins for themselves or deceased relatives.
It originated in Judaism, when every 50 years a year of rest for the land was celebrated (to strengthen crops), along with the liberation of slaves to restore their equality and reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. The beginning of the Jewish Jubilee was marked by the sound of a ram’s horn, the jobel, from which the Christian name “Jubilee” derives.
The Catholic Church began the tradition of the Holy Year in 1300 with Pope Boniface VIII, planning for a Jubilee every century. It is currently celebrated every 25 years, allowing each generation to experience at least one Holy Year.
