Jubilee 2025. The Holy Doors will open in Rome’s Papal Basilicas… with one exception!

St. Peter’s Holy Door

Introduction

The opening of the Holy Door is a particularly important and deeply meaningful moment. This gesture, in fact, identifies the beginning of the Jubilee, and passing through it is a sign of the saving passage opened by Christ through his incarnation, death, and resurrection, calling everyone to live reconciled with God and with one another. For this reason, passing through it evokes the passage that every Christian is called to make from sin to grace. In the Holy Year of 2025, the only Holy Doors that will be open will be those of Rome’s 4 Basilicas… with one exception

No Holy Door outside Rome

For the 2025 Jubilee, there will be no opening of a Holy Door outside Rome.
This is clarified by the Dicastery for Evangelization, which is responsible for organizing the Jubilee, in a note dated August 1, in response to numerous requests received from various quarters concerning “the configuration and opening of the Holy Door in Cathedral Churches, International and National Shrines, as well as in other particularly significant places of worship.”
Thus, the experience of the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2016 will not be repeated, when Holy Doors were opened throughout the world, with the Pope opening the first one in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, on November 29, 2015.

The 4 Holy Doors of Rome and one in a prison

Recalling the precise instructions contained in the Pope’s Bull, Spes non confundit, it is reiterated that the first Holy Door to be opened by the Pontiff will be that of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican on December 24, 2024, officially inaugurating the Ordinary Jubilee. Subsequently, the Holy Door of the cathedral, St. John Lateran, will be opened on December 29; on January 1, 2025, the Holy Door of the Basilica of St. Mary Major; and finally, on January 5, the Holy Door of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. These last three Holy Doors will be closed by Sunday, December 28 of the same year, while the Ordinary Jubilee will end with the closing of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica on January 6, 2026, the Feast of the Epiphany. In all cathedrals and co-cathedrals, on Sunday, December 29, 2024, diocesan bishops will celebrate the Eucharist as the solemn opening of the Jubilee Year, according to the Ritual to be prepared for the occasion.”

The only exception provided for is due to Pope Francis’s expressed desire to personally open a Holy Door in a prison to offer inmates a concrete sign of closeness» (no. 10). At present, there are still no details regarding this last provision.

The Indulgence, a distinctive sign of the Jubilee

In its conclusion, the Dicastery’s note recalls: «A distinctive and identifying sign of the Jubilee Year, as handed down since the first Jubilee in 1300, is the indulgence, which “intends to express the fullness of God’s forgiveness, which knows no bounds” (cf. no. 23), through the Sacrament of Penance and signs of charity and hope (cf. nos. 7-15).» And «to experience this moment of grace fully, people are urged to consult the specific places and different ways indicated in the Decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary of May 13, 2024», the text that sets out the “Norms on the Granting of the Indulgence during the Ordinary Jubilee of 2025.”

Places where the Indulgence may be obtained

The Decree establishes that the indulgence may be obtained in the Holy Land by visiting at least one of the three basilicas: the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem, or the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. In other ecclesiastical jurisdictions, the Jubilee indulgence will be granted by visiting the cathedral church or other churches and sacred places designated by the local bishop. The Apostolic Penitentiary lists other pilgrimage sites in Rome, from the Shrine of Divine Love to the Catacombs, to give a few examples. Elsewhere in the world are the two Basilicas of Assisi, Saint Francis and Saint Mary of the Angels, and the Pontifical Basilicas of the Holy House of Loreto, Our Lady of Pompeii, and Saint Anthony of Padua.

Wishing everyone a blessed journey, and let us know in the comments how you are experiencing the wait for Jubilee 2025!
