The Jubilee of Law Enforcement is a special moment to reflect on a mission that goes beyond professional duty: it is a call to serve, protect, and fight for the common good. This event, which unites faith and vocation, celebrates men and women who embody deeply Christian values such as sacrifice, justice, and the defense of the weakest. But what lessons can we draw from their example? And how can we connect their work to our life of faith?
An example of Christian values in everyday life
Law enforcement agencies are a concrete example of how Christian virtues can be lived out every day. Their work reminds us of the importance of putting others first, making sacrifices for the common good, and never giving in when faced with evil. Is this not what Christ asks of us in the Gospel? Their vocation invites us to reflect on our personal commitment: how willing are we to give for others, fight for justice, and defend those who are most vulnerable?
Saint Michael the Archangel: the defender of good
It is no coincidence that Saint Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of the police. This powerful defender of good, who defeats evil in Christian tradition, represents the ideal of justice and protection that every law enforcement officer seeks to embody. Turning to him in prayer is a way to ask for strength and guidance in the most difficult moments, and the books dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel published by Editrice Shalom offer valuable reading for exploring his role in our life of faith.
Salvo D’Acquisto
Many members of the force have given their lives for the common good. In this regard, we must mention the admirable figure of Carabinieri vice brigadier Salvo D’Acquisto, who said: «If I die for a hundred others, I will be reborn a hundred times: God is with me, and I am not afraid!». He sacrificed his life to save a group of civilians during a Nazi troop roundup on September 23, 1943, in Torrimpietra, a locality north of Rome, where he had been assigned to the Carabinieri Station since December 1942. He had been advised to take refuge in Rome amid the chaotic situation that had arisen, but he replied: «My duty is to be with the people entrusted to us». A heroic act that earned Salvo D’Acquisto the Gold Medal of Military Valor and led to the opening of a canonization process. How many other examples could we give of heroism that goes as far as offering one’s life!
Prayer: strength for those who struggle every day
Charity and prayer: these were the guiding principles of Salvo D’Acquisto’s work. One constant was praying the Rosary. His grandmother had taught him this prayer: she would gather all the residents of the building where they lived on the third floor to pray the Rosary together with her family.
Anyone facing complex challenges knows how important it is to have inner strength to support them along the way. Prayer can become that safe refuge, an invisible weapon that gives courage and hope. And for those looking for a starting point, praying the Rosary is a simple yet powerful tool.
Our invitation
During this Jubilee, let us be inspired by the example of the Law Enforcement Forces. Let us pray for them, so that they may be supported in their mission, and reflect on how the values they embody can also find a place in our lives. Let us entrust ourselves to Saint Michael the Archangel, cultivate inner strength through prayer, and discover stories of courage and faith like that of Salvo D’Acquisto. Because the true battle against evil begins in the heart and faith of each one of us.
