Joseph today: the silent saint who speaks to our present

Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus

Hidden in the folds of sacred history, enveloped in the industrious silence of his workshop in Nazareth, Saint Joseph, whom the Church celebrates on March 19, emerges from the sources not as a resounding protagonist, but as the discreet yet fundamental shadow of an event that changed the course of humanity. His biography, woven with humility and obedience, still resonates today with surprising relevance, offering a model of inner justice, unconditional acceptance, and mature love.

Seeking the path of goodness for the other

Let us imagine him, this young man from Bethlehem, a descendant of King David, a woodworker with a recognized talent and a gentle, devout spirit. His life takes an unexpected turn when, among the unmarried men of his tribe, he is designated as the husband of the young Mary: a divine sign that binds him inseparably to the mystery.
Joseph’s heart, betrothed according to Jewish customs that already regarded the bond as almost marital, is put to the test by shocking news: Mary is pregnant before they have begun living together. Anguish overwhelms him, along with the weight of suspicion and the conflict between the law, which would require a public denunciation with tragic consequences for Mary (stoning according to ancient law), and his profound respect and love for her. His justice is not rigid observance of the rule, but an inner righteousness that seeks the path of goodness: he chooses to «divorce her quietly» so as not to expose her to humiliation and condemnation. How modern this gesture is! In an age when public outcry and hasty judgment often prevail, Joseph teaches us the value of discretion, compassion, and the silent choice that protects the dignity of others

Mary and Joseph, Holy Spouses

A succession of courageous “yeses”

God’s design, however, is greater than human fears. An angel, a heavenly messenger, breaks into Joseph’s troubled sleep to reveal the truth: what has been conceived in Mary comes from the Holy Spirit. In that “do not be afraid” resounds a universal invitation to let go of our fears in the face of the unexpected, to welcome reality, even when it upsets our plans and expectations. Joseph, son of David, trusts and obeys the divine voice that broadens his horizons, enabling him to see beyond appearances and perceive a hidden Providence even in what initially seems dramatic.
His life becomes a succession of courageous “yeses”: to God’s plan, to the arduous journey to Bethlehem, and to the birth of the Son in a cave. We see him as the diligent protector of the Holy Family, forced to endure the harsh experience of being a refugee in Egypt to escape Herod’s fury. The experience of having to leave one’s homeland for the safety of one’s loved ones unfortunately continues to be a dramatic reality for millions of people in our time. In this, Joseph becomes an icon of those forced to flee, of those who welcome and protect the vulnerable.

The beauty of everyday life

Then came the return, the humble life in Nazareth, and the work of a carpenter alongside Mary and the growing Jesus. An ordinary existence, marked by faith and sacrifice, culminating in the episode of finding the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple. Joseph shows us the beauty of everyday life lived with love and dedication, the importance of being present and responsible as children grow, while recognizing that, ultimately, they belong to a greater design.
Saint Joseph dies before Jesus begins his preaching. Though he remains in the background, his figure is an emblem of adoptive fatherhood lived out fully and responsibly, a love that does not arise from a biological bond but from a free and conscious choice to welcome and protect a life.

If you would like to learn more about the features of Saint Joseph's life, we recommend Life of Saint Joseph. The volume - written by Maria Cecilia Baij, an eighteenth-century Benedictine nun currently in the process of beatification and canonization - retraces the life of Saint Joseph through pages steeped in private revelations that reveal a Saint Joseph in line with Pope Francis's invitation to rediscover him as “father in tenderness,” “father of welcome,” and “father with creative courage.” With an engaging mix of Gospel narratives and pious traditions, Cecilia Baij's portrait of Saint Joseph offers a unique and compelling experience that resonates with the relevance of the present day.

flight of the Holy Family

Today, in fact, the figure of Saint Joseph speaks powerfully to our families, our communities, and individuals. He reminds us that true love is the kind that knows how to go beyond the initial infatuation, welcoming the other “with eyes open,” with their weaknesses and surprises; he urges us not to close ourselves off in the face of life's unexpected events, but to trust in a Providence that can transform even difficulties into opportunities for growth and deeper love. He teaches us the value of diligent silence, of a justice combined with mercy, and of an obedience born from attentive listening to God's voice in our conscience and in events.
In a world that often exalts appearances and clamor, Saint Joseph, the just man, the faithful husband, the loving father, continues to be a beacon of humility, inner strength, and practical love, a relevant and necessary model for rediscovering the beauty of a life devoted to silence and faith. Let us pray to him, entrust ourselves to him, and imitate him!
