The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church and of every individual Christian. He is God's Love dwelling in our hearts and entering into communion with us. The Spirit Himself is defined as “the gift of God” par excellence, a gift that, in turn, communicates seven spiritual gifts to those who welcome Him: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of God.
Today we reflect on “Wisdom.” But pay attention: we are not talking about human wisdom, the kind that comes from simple knowledge, study, or experience. It is something much deeper. Let us discover it together!
What is “Wisdom”?
The gift of “Wisdom” is the grace of seeing everything through God's eyes: the world, the situations we face, the problems... We often tend to see things according to our mood at the moment or influenced by feelings such as love, hatred, envy... Instead, Wisdom is precisely what the Holy Spirit works in us to enable us to see everything through God's eyes. This Wisdom goes beyond simple human knowledge and intelligence, helping us understand the profound meaning of life and history, beyond the surface, in order to discover their ultimate meaning as intended by the Lord.
Where does this precious gift come from?
This wonderful gift is received through the sacrament of Confirmation and actively lived through our intimacy with God, in that deep and constant relationship we have with Him. When we are in communion with the Lord, the Holy Spirit acts in our hearts, almost “transfiguring” them, and makes us feel God's warmth and special love for us. It is precisely in this relationship of love that the Holy Spirit grants us Wisdom.
How can a “wise” person be recognized?
A person made “wise” by the Holy Spirit is not someone who can answer every question. Rather, it is someone who “knows” God, who understands how God acts, who can discern what is of God and what is not. In this spiritual sense, the heart of a wise person has the “taste and flavor of God.” In “wise” people, everything speaks of God and they become a beautiful and living sign of His presence and love.
A gift, not a personal achievement
It is essential to understand that we cannot acquire Wisdom on our own. It is a gift from God, a precious gift He bestows on those who make themselves docile, that is, open and receptive, to the Holy Spirit. Through Baptism first, and Confirmation afterward, we become temples of the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts, and we are free to listen to Him or not. If we choose to listen to Him, He teaches us the path of this wise wisdom.
How to ask for and live Wisdom in everyday life
The gift of Wisdom teaches us to see through God's eyes, to hear with God's ears, and to love with God's heart. And the good news is that we can all receive this wisdom. How? By constantly asking the Holy Spirit for it. It is a gift, and like every gift, it must be asked for. It is not obtained through effort, but welcomed with humility and openness. We can call upon it through prayer, meditating on the Word of God, and listening to the Spirit in our everyday lives. It is a gift that grows through practice, by pausing, reflecting, and viewing events through the eyes of faith.
The gift of Wisdom – the only one capable of bringing inner peace and clarity – guides us in our daily decisions, in our families, at work, in our relationships, and through personal difficulties, helping us act with balance and discernment, beyond the instinct of the moment.
Why is Wisdom a gift to ask for?
We live immersed in information, with unlimited access to data and knowledge, but we often lack the ability to discern and to read deeply what truly matters. God's Wisdom is not only “understanding,” but living with a heart illuminated by truth. It is the gift that, today more than ever, helps us distinguish what is essential from what is superfluous, so that we are not swept away by what is fleeting, but instead seek what has eternal value.
Wisdom is a gift that transforms
In a world that confuses simple knowledge with true understanding, the Wisdom given by the Holy Spirit remains a precious beacon, a sure guide through the storm. It is not only a help in understanding things better, but a way to live with depth, authenticity, and love. Those who receive it find light, meaning, and direction in life.
True Wisdom is not just knowledge, but seeing through God's eyes. It is a gift that brings peace and clarity.
