A Possible, Concrete, and Daily Journey for Each of Us
The Solemnity of All Saints, which we celebrate every November 1, is much more than a liturgical commemoration: it is a personal and communal invitation to look upward and let ourselves be inspired by those who lived the Gospel to the fullest.
It is a day on which the Church reminds us that holiness is not an exception, but a universal vocation.
The Saints: Different Faces of a Single Calling
Every saint is a unique reflection of God's light. Their lives were profoundly different in era, culture, temperament, and vocation.
Yet they all tell the same truth: God can do great things in those who trust in Him.
There is no “one-size-fits-all model” of holiness:
some lived in the silence of a monastery, while others walked the streets of the world;
some have witnessed their faith through martyrdom, and others through illness, poverty, motherhood, or daily work.
As Pope Francis said,
“Saints are not superheroes, nor were they born perfect. They are people who, before reaching the glory of heaven, lived ordinary lives.”
They experienced hardship, doubt, and loneliness, but they did not give up.
They knew how to transform trials into opportunities for love and joys into praise of God.
Holiness Explained to Children (and Not Only Them): Carlo Acutis's "Kit"
On this journey toward holiness, we are guided by the luminous example of Carlo Acutis, the young blessed who died at just 15 in 2006 and knew how to live his faith with disarming freshness.
Passionate about computer science and deeply in love with the Eucharist, Carlo knew how to speak about God in the simple, direct language of young people.
To help children in catechism understand what it means to become saints, Carlo devised a real “kit for holiness”: eight concrete steps, accessible to everyone, showing that holiness is not made up of extraordinary deeds, but of daily faithfulness.
Carlo Acutis's Kit for Holiness
1. Desire holiness with all your heart.
If you do not yet desire it, ask the Lord for it insistently. The first step is desire: holiness begins with a heart that seeks.
2. Attend Holy Mass every day and receive Communion.
For Carlo, the Eucharist was “the highway to heaven”.
3. Pray the Holy Rosary every day.
A simple yet incredibly powerful prayer that unites us with Mary and guides us to Jesus.
4. Read a passage from Sacred Scripture every day.
The Word of God is a light for our steps, a compass for our choices.
5. Set aside time for Eucharistic adoration.
Even just a few minutes before the tabernacle: that is where the heart is transformed.
6. Go to confession every week, even for venial sins.
Confession is a bath of mercy that renews us.
7. Make resolutions and small sacrifices to help others.
Small sacrifices offered with love become seeds of holiness.
8. Entrust yourself to your guardian angel.
He can become your best friend. We are never alone on the journey.
A journey for everyone, today
This “kit” is not just for children.
It is also a valuable guide for us adults, often distracted, weary, and disillusioned.
In a world that rushes by, measuring everything in terms of success and visibility, holiness reminds us that true greatness is love.
And that every day is an opportunity to start over.
Holiness is not perfection, but perseverance in love.
It means saying “yes” to God in small things, in hidden gestures, in our daily relationships.
It means living with an open heart, looking toward heaven while keeping our feet firmly planted on the ground.
On this feast day, let us allow ourselves to be challenged by the lives of the saints.
Like Carlo, let us also ask not to waste even a minute of our lives away from God.
«Sadness is looking toward oneself,
happiness is looking toward God.»
