On June 14, the twentieth World Blood Donor Day is celebrated; an opportunity to reflect on the importance of blood donation and to thank those who, through an act of love and generosity, help save lives while raising awareness of such an important issue. This yearβs motto is: β20 years of celebrating donation: thank you, blood donors!β In this way, the focus is placed both on gratitude toward blood and plasma donors and on continuing to promote the culture of such a noble gesture.
The importance of blood donation
Every day, people around the world need blood transfusions to survive accidents, surgery, or serious illnesses. Donating blood is an act of solidarity and love toward others, a way to put Jesusβ words into practice: βLove your neighbor as yourselfβ (Mt 22:39). In fact, each blood donation can save up to three lives, making our gift a source of hope for those in need.
The history of World Blood Donor Day
This day was established in 2004 by the World Health Organization to raise public awareness of the importance of blood donation and to thank volunteer donors. June 14 was chosen in honor of Karl Landsteiner, the Austrian biologist who discovered blood groups. This discovery revolutionized medicine, making safe and effective transfusions possible.

Blood donation and Pope Francis
The Catholic Church encourages blood donation as an act of love toward others. On several occasions, Pope Francis has praised blood donors, describing their gesture as an expression of concern for others and a service to life; he has called blood donation a βsimple but very important actβ that encourages society to be supportive and sensitive toward those in need. Moreover, in his speech on April 13, 2019, addressed to the Italian Association for Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation (AIDO), the Pope emphasized how important it is for organ and blood donation to be a free, non-commercial act, expressing generous love and responsibility that strengthens universal brotherhood.Β
A gesture that helps everyone
Blood donation is seen as an opportunity for everyone, regardless of any creed, to contribute to the common good. It is an act that, by transcending differences, brings people together around a common goal: helping those in need. Without ever forgetting that any of us may find ourselves in a similar situation!
World Blood Donor Day reminds us that every drop counts and that only together can we make a difference. It is an appeal to each of us to become protagonists in a more united world; an opportunity to reflect on the gift of life and to encourage new donors to join this noble cause. Every donation is an act of love that can make the difference between life and death. So let us take part, donate blood, and bear witness to our faith through this concrete gesture as well.

Prayer of the Blood Donor by Saint John XXIIIΒ
O Lord Jesus, who regard every small gift we give to our brothers and sisters as something done for you, please accept my small sacrifice and bless my desire to help those who suffer through the gift of my blood. I ask you for no reward, O Lord, nor any satisfaction, but I pray that you give value to my small gift, which, together with that of many donors, increases its effectiveness and helps lift the burden from many brothers and sisters. Keep me in good health so that I may continue to give of myself to others and, as the material offering of blood reaches my brother or sisterβs body and strengthens them, grant, O Lord, that my sacrifice, united with yours, infinitely greater, may serve the redemption of their soul. Amen.
