The Miraculous Medal is a gift of grace and mercy that Our Lady gave to the Church and the world through her apparitions to Catherine Labouré, a simple nun of the Daughters of Charity. The Medal is a sign of Mary's maternal presence and protection, inviting us to conform ourselves to her Son Jesus. Those who wear it with faith receive numerous blessings and heavenly favors. Let us discover its story together.

The Apparitions to Catherine Labouré
Catherine Labouré was born in 1806 into a family of French farmers. At the age of 24, she joined the congregation of the Daughters of Charity. She was assigned to the Motherhouse in Paris, where she cared for the elderly. Catherine was a humble, obedient, and silent woman, but she also possessed great faith and a profound union with God.

Our Lady also foretold other apparitions, which took place in September, November, and December of that same year. The most important was that of November 27, when Catherine saw Our Lady standing on a globe, with her hands covered in rings radiating rays of light. Our Lady explained to her: “These rays symbolize the graces that I pour out on those who ask me for them. The rings that do not emit rays represent the graces people forget to ask me for.” Then she showed her the reverse of the medal, with the letters M and A intertwined, the hearts of Jesus and Mary, and twelve stars. Our Lady told her: “Have a medal struck according to this design. All those who wear it around their necks will receive great graces. Graces will abound for those who wear it with confidence.”
Catherine obeyed and told everything to her confessor, Father Aladel, who initially did not believe her. Only two years later, in 1832, did she obtain permission to have the medal struck. It spread rapidly and was called “miraculous” because of the numerous wonders that occurred to those who wore it. Catherine did not reveal to anyone that she was the visionary, but lived hidden and faithful to her vocation until her death in 1876. She was beatified in 1933 and canonized in 1947 by Pope Pius XII, who proclaimed her the “saint of modern times.”

The Meaning of the Miraculous Medal
The Miraculous Medal is a treasure of grace and beauty, containing within it the mystery of the Immaculate Conception and the heart of Marian spirituality. Every element of the medal has a symbolic and theological significance that helps us understand Mary’s message and mission.

The globe that Our Lady holds in her hands represents the world, which she offers to God as mother and queen. The globe also symbolizes Christ’s kingdom, which Mary invites us to establish through our witness and commitment.
The rays emerging from her hands symbolize the graces Mary obtains for us from her Son when we ask for them with trust and devotion. The rays are of different lengths, indicating that graces are proportionate to our faith and charity.
The words “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you” are a profession of faith in Mary’s Immaculate Conception, proclaimed a dogma in 1854, and a plea for her intercession, as she is our advocate and our mother.

The hearts of Jesus and Mary symbolize the love that unites them and flows out upon us. Jesus’ heart is crowned with thorns, recalling his Passion and mercy. Mary’s heart is pierced by a sword, recalling her sorrow and compassion.
The twelve stars symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles, who represent the people of God and the Church. They also symbolize Mary’s royalty: she is the woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head, as described in Revelation.
The Miraculous Medal is therefore a tangible sign of God’s love for us and of Mary’s mediation, which leads us to him. Wearing it around our neck means welcoming her presence and help, imitating her virtues, and entrusting our needs to her. It also means being her witnesses and apostles, bringing her smile and peace to everyone we meet. The Miraculous Medal is a path of holiness and joy that makes us feel like children loved by a heavenly Mother.
