The structure of the Rosary

Catechesis by Bishop Martinelli

Continue exploring the Holy Rosary with content by His Excellency Bishop Raffaello Martinelli, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Frascati.
You can read the first part of the text on our blog.

How many Hail Marys does the Holy Rosary currently consist of?

It consists of 200 Hail Marys, divided into decades and grouped into 4 cycles of 5 Mysteries each. Each chaplet of the Holy Rosary consists of 5 decades. The Rosary beads arose as a tool for counting prayers, modeled on similar instruments already in use among other religions, particularly Buddhists (108 beads) and Muslims (99 beads, that is, as many as the names attributed to God by the Quran). For example, in 1516 Leo X approved a ‘chaplet’ in honor of Our Lord consisting of 33 small beads (Christ’s years according to popular tradition) for reciting an equal number of Our Fathers, with the addition of five larger beads (Christ’s wounds) for reciting five Hail Marys.

Why did the Holy Rosary in the past consist of 150 Hail Marys?

The Holy Rosary of 150 Hail Marys recalled the 150 psalms that are part of the Liturgy of the Hours and that in the past (and sometimes even today) were replaced for the illiterate by the daily recitation of 150 Our Fathers. With the development of Marian devotion, the people were encouraged to recite 150 Hail Marys, at a time when this biblical prayer did not yet have its second part, which was added toward the end of the 15th century.

What importance does theHail Mary?

“The first part of the Hail Mary, taken from the Gospel, enables us each time to hear again the words with which God addressed the Virgin through the Angel, as well as the words of blessing spoken by her cousin Elizabeth. The second part of the Hail Mary resounds as the response of children who, turning in supplication to their Mother, do nothing other than express their own adherence to the plan of salvation revealed by God. Thus the thoughts of those who pray remain constantly anchored in Scripture and in the mysteries presented in it” (BENEDICT XVI, Address, Pompeii, 19-10-2008).
