Mother Teresa of Calcutta is one of the most beloved spiritual figures of the 20th century. Her smiling face, her hands caressing the dying, her steady voice defending the dignity of the poor: everything about her speaks of concrete love, lived out to the last breath. But behind that light lay a long journey through darkness. For nearly fifty years, Mother Teresa lived through a profound dark night of the spirit, an experience of dryness and inner silence that brought her even closer to the mystery of the Cross.
Saints are not superheroes
We often think of saints as perfect beings, always certain, always serene. But the truth is that saints are like us: fragile people, beset by doubts, fears, and moments of discouragement. Holiness is not the absence of difficulties, but the ability to remain faithful even when everything seems to be collapsing.
Mother Teresa, in private letters made public after her death, revealed a profound spiritual suffering: «Jesus has a special love for you. But sometimes, the depth of that love is manifested in silence«. She felt that she could no longer perceive God’s presence, that she had been abandoned, and yet she continued to serve with tireless dedication.
