On these cold winter days, it is easier to come down with a seasonal ailment. The most common is a sore throat. If we should suffer from one, there is a saint who can help us: Saint Blaise.
Patron saint of ear, nose, and throat specialists, Saint Blaise is often invoked for throat ailments. Among the various miracles attributed to his intercession is the healing of a child who had a fish bone stuck in his throat and was about to suffocate. In desperation, the mother ran to ask Saint Blaise for help: he placed his hands over the boy’s body, and as the child coughed, he spat out the bone and was healed. This event is linked to the rite of blessing the throat, which the parish priest administers during the liturgical celebration by crossing two candles; in ancient times, blessed oil was used.

Who was Saint Blaise?
Saint Blaise lived in Armenia between the 3rd and 4th centuries, during the persecutions of Christians. He spent his youth studying, devoting himself particularly to medicine. He was a physician who treated illnesses of the body and, at the same time, through his example and kind words, managed to heal spiritual ailments.
Drawn to religious life, he was considering entering a monastery when, after the Bishop of Sebaste died, he was elected as his successor. He loved the mountains and often spent long periods there; the animals he tamed and cared for when they were injured or ill kept him company. Following several miraculous interventions on behalf of people in need, word soon spread that the Saint was a healer.
The fierce and bloody persecutions of Christians did not spare Bishop Blaise. After being captured and tried, he was sentenced to beheading. The Saint never renounced his faith in Christ.
