Nek: a light can be kindled in the darkness

Nek

Who does not know Nek: an established singer-songwriter who has appeared on the Sanremo Festival stage several times. It may seem strange for his name to be associated with weakness, fragility, and darkness, yet he is precisely the one who found the strength and courage to lay himself bare and speak about himself in these terms when he appeared as a guest on the program Le Iene.
In a monologue, he retraced his life, with its lights and shadows, to ultimately deliver a message of profound hope: “It is not easy, but if we learn to accept them, even bad things can be transformed into opportunities for redemption.”
His artistic career officially began in 1993, when he appeared at the Sanremo Festival with the song In te: a courageous song in which he addresses the delicate subject of a life just beginning and the need to protect it. “That song was accused of being against abortion, and it was torn apart even before I sang it. I went onstage, but no voice came out. I wanted to disappear. That evening, for the first time, I discovered a courage I did not think I possessed, and that would accompany me throughout my career and life.”

In the meantime, life brought him together with his wife, Patrizia Vacondio, and his two daughters were born. That journey, including marriage, was one of light and shadow, but it was supported by his encounter with the Nuovi Orizzonti Community, which guides the couple on a journey of faith.
And it is with this faith, with this “new heart,” that Nek also shares another moment of darkness overcome with the “courage of weakness”: “Years later, when my father died, the pain confronted me with a great truth: I would never again be the same person. On that occasion too, courage helped me, but a different kind of courage: the courage of weakness. The courage to accept change. I transformed his absence into a presence, and every day I find my father again in the plants in his garden, in the scent of his woodland, in the Lambrusco I drink with friends.”

The “lesson” of facing pain with hope remains with him: “It also happened two years ago, when I tore open my hand with a circular saw. A musician’s hand is everything: what would I have been without music? After the initial despair, I gathered the courage I had left: I accepted that, perhaps, there would be a new Filippo, a different one. I trusted that a light could be kindled in the darkness.”
A light can be kindled in the darkness: this is the precious message Nek has drawn from his life experience, and it is a powerful, genuine message that sows hope… Let us carry it with us!
