At a time when spiritual seeking is often reduced to fleeting emotions or abstract mythological figures, the truth about the guardian angel risks being relegated to a sweet, distant childhood memory. But what if we told you that the guardian angel is neither a myth nor a fairy tale, but a radiant truth of the Catholic faith, a real spiritual presence? Rediscovering this figure means opening our eyes to the tangible reality of God's love and his providence. As Pope Benedict XVI stated, excluding angels would mean removing “a significant part of the Gospel.” It is time to dust off this faith and see it for what it is: the guardian angel is a traveling companion, a powerful ally, and a living sign that God never abandons us.
The personal gift of providence
Catholic theology teaches that God, almighty and creator of all things visible and invisible, created purely spiritual, immortal, personal beings called “angels.” The term “angel” means “sent one” or “messenger.” But the most astonishing gift of His fatherly care is the guardian angel, personally assigned to each of us.
The existence of guardian angels is a truth of faith. Jesus himself assures us of their great dignity by stating that “their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Mt 18:10). This “always seeing the face of the Father” is the highest manifestation of the worship of God. Knowing that we have beside us a being who constantly contemplates God yet devotes himself entirely to us is tangible evidence that our life is precious in his eyes.
