Throughout the world, Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14, honoring the patron saint of lovers. This holiday has very ancient origins and is especially widespread in English-speaking countries, where it is customary for lovers, as well as friends and family members, to exchange cards called “Valentines.”
Despite the commercial aspect that many criticize, Valentine's Day remains a beautiful celebration for all lovers.
But… why was Saint Valentine chosen specifically as the patron saint of lovers?
Historical sources are scarce, but Church tradition has identified Valentine of Terni, bishop and martyr, as the saint celebrated on February 14.
Valentine is said to have been born in Terni in 176 AD; after becoming bishop of Terni, he devoted his life to protecting and helping Christians, safeguarding them from persecution. He ultimately suffered torture and martyrdom under Emperor Aurelian.
His legendary fame derives from the fact that he was the first religious figure to celebrate a marriage between people of different religions: Sabino, a pagan legionnaire, and Serapia, a young Christian woman suffering from tuberculosis. Legend has it that the two spouses died embracing each other during Valentine's blessing.
Another legend tells that one day Valentine saw two lovers arguing; he approached them with a rose in his hand and, holding the stem of the rose together with them, blessed them. Some time later, on February 14, the two had Valentine officiate their wedding. From that day on, on the 14th of every month, couples in love would go to him for a blessing.
Many other legends revolve around this saint, but they all have one thing in common: the celebration of love

On Valentine's Day, it is customary to exchange love notes, chocolates, flowers, and jewelry. It is the ideal occasion to choose, as a symbol of the special bond that unites us with those we love, jewelry with a profound meaning of love and protection, as well as rings featuring intertwined hands, such as the famous Saint Rita ring, and fine rosaries with beads made of precious materials.
“Wearing” love makes the person who wears it more beautiful and, at the same time, protects them!
