Lent: a time to savor

The Shroud

First reflection of the fourth week of Lent

A simple piece of cloth yellowed by time, a long shroud that for a few hours wrapped a tortured corpse, leaving behind conspicuous bloodstains. But the fascination of the Shroud goes far beyond the object’s material nature. There is something that cannot be explained. There is the image of that body, front and back, imprinted in a way that remains mysterious.

For centuries, that linen has been venerated as Christianity’s most precious relic. A very illustrious identity is attributed to that corpse, making everything more intriguing and complicated. Is it possible that the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth escaped the ravages of time and has come down to us? To the great surprise of many skeptics, a century of investigation has provided a solid body of evidence supporting the authenticity of that document.

The Shroud is a startling document. In its presence, one has the feeling of standing on the threshold of a mystery that speaks directly to the hearts of ordinary people and challenges scientists.

Do I feel the importance of Jesus’ Resurrection? Do I want to live remembering his sacrifice for me?

I’ll be waiting for you tomorrow morning to continue reflecting together!
