Lent: a time to savor

Last Supper

First reflection of the second week of Lent

In the second week of Lent, we allow ourselves to be challenged by the meditations of Father Lorenzo Baldella. Insights that… cannot leave us indifferent:

“Here is a small book that will help you pray as you meditate on the Passion of Jesus. Clearly, when recounting the stories of the Passion, the evangelists allow their reflections to shine through—different yet complementary. Following in their footsteps, we have sought to relate the events of the Passion and the reflections on them to our times and to the situations in which Christians today live.
The reader can also add further reflections to ours.

“Do this in memory of me” (Lk 22:19)
Luke reminded us of Jesus’ command to repeat the supper: “Do this in memory of me.” But be careful! Repeat the supper with all the content it had—the supper that is one with the cross!
We can draw a triangle whose highest point is the cross: the Last Supper, the cross, and the Lord’s Supper or Mass—or the Masses that the Christian community celebrates in assembly every Sunday.

“Do this in memory of me.” Memory is not mere recollection, but a new saving presence of God in Jesus Christ. If we do not want to consider the cross an event in the past, finished and concluded there on Calvary 2,000 years ago, and our Masses merely a ritual empty of content and meaning, then we must affirm that the content of the cross reaches us precisely in and through the ritual, which is therefore filled with the saving mystery of Jesus’ death.”

How do I live the Mass? Do I feel the saving presence of Jesus?

I’ll be waiting for you tomorrow morning so we can continue reflecting together!
