In the socio-relational context of our time, the crisis of the family is becoming increasingly evident, manifested through a high number of separations and divorces. We are often inclined to think, “it will never happen to me,” without noticing the warning signs that gradually emerge in everyday life. But what happens when the ideals that have sustained life together fade away, leaving a sense of disorientation and betrayal? The causes of the breakdown of the marital bond are many and, although every story is unique, certain situations and motives recur. Among the most common difficulties are individualism, which leads to a “me+me” marriage rather than the building of a “we”, a lack of dialogue and fear of conflict, difficulty detaching from one’s family of origin, managing cultural differences, routine that extinguishes passion, financial difficulties…
Marriage as the Sacrament of Love
However, there are life paths that, despite their particular circumstances, offer luminous guidance. The life of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, woman, wife, mother, and physician, represents an extraordinary example of the “holiness next door”, a powerful antidote to the challenges facing families and marriages today.
Gianna and Pietro Molla met on December 8, 1954, and from the very beginning entrusted their relationship to heaven. Their letters reveal the joy of an engagement lived in the light of the Lord, a profound dialogue, and a continual discovery of one another. Gianna expresses her desire to «make Pietro happy» and to «give herself in order to form a truly Christian family». For Gianna, marriage is an «effort always directed toward making the other happy», a «Sacrament of Love». She imagines their future family not so much as a place, but as «a small cenacle where Jesus reigns over all our affections, desires, and actions». This profound sense of dedication and commitment to building a “we” based on esteem, trust, and respect stands in stark contrast to the individualism that dominates many relationships today. Gianna and Pietro show that happiness cannot be taken for granted but is built day by day, thanking God for everything.
Sacrifice for Life: Love That Conquers Pain
Motherhood was an immense joy for Gianna, but it was also the context of her greatest sacrifice. When diagnosed with a uterine fibroma during her fourth pregnancy, Gianna, although a physician and fully aware of the risks, did not hesitate in her choice: «I am ready for anything, as long as my baby is saved». She rejected the options that would have endangered the child’s life, choosing the only one that placed her own life at risk. This decision was not the result of blind obedience to a law, but of a profound maternal instinct and unquestionable trust in providence. Shortly before giving birth, she said to her husband: «Pietro, if you have to decide between me and the child, do not hesitate: choose, and I insist, the baby. Save him». This act of extreme love and self-giving stands as a monument to the sacredness of life and to the essence of conjugal and family love.
The Course Charted by Gianna’s Life
The life of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla offers clear guidance for facing family and marital crises:
• Trust in God and constant prayer: Gianna lives every moment entrusting herself to the Lord. This profound faith makes it possible to face difficulties with serenity and hope, overcoming the temptation to “give up on everything” when things become complicated.
• Love as self-giving, not possession: Gianna gives herself completely to her husband and children, putting their happiness first. This stands in opposition to individualism and the tendency to use others to satisfy oneself.
• The importance of dialogue and sharing: open communication and the willingness to tell each other what one thinks and feels, even during conflict, are fundamental. Gianna and Pietro come to know and understand each other deeply through dialogue, including in their letters.
• Living everyday life extraordinarily: Gianna teaches us to make life a masterpiece by living everyday life well and doing ordinary things in an extraordinary way.
• Accepting challenges and tolerating conflict: Gianna faces pain and difficulties with fortitude and surrender to the Lord. “Healthy” couples do not avoid conflict, but are willing to tell each other what they think and feel, what gives them pleasure or causes them pain, and also what they desire.
• Joy as a gift from God: in marriage, Gianna is «immensely happy» and reminds us that the secret of happiness is «living moment by moment and thanking the Lord for everything that, in his goodness, he sends us day by day».
Gianna’s life is a reminder of the essence of love; she encourages us to be credible witnesses to the greatness and beauty of Christianity, to smile at God and at all those whom the Lord sends our way. Her life shows that true happiness, earthly and eternal, depends on «faithfully following our vocation», whatever it may be, living love with total commitment and unwavering trust.
