In the heart of Tuscia, within the medieval walls of Viterbo, a young figure flourished in the 13th century and still enchants people today with her spiritual strength and prophetic fervor: Saint Rose of Viterbo. Born on July 9, 1233, into a humble family, Rose lived for only 18 years, but her brief life was marked by extraordinary intensity of faith and a courage that challenged imperial authority and the conventions of her time.

An early and ardent vocation

From childhood, Rose showed a deep desire for consecration. She tried to join the Poor Clares, but was rejected because of her fragile health. After what was considered a miraculous healing, she joined the Third Order of Saint Francis, embracing the spirit of Saint Francis with radical commitment: poverty, charity, and preaching. With a cross in her hand, she walked the streets of Viterbo, calling people to conversion and singing the praises of God and the Virgin Mary.

Prophetess and defender of the Church

In the turbulent context of the struggle between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, Rose openly opposed Emperor Frederick II, supporting the Pope and denouncing the Cathar heresy. Her voice, young but steadfast, cost her exile: she was expelled from Viterbo and found refuge in Soriano nel Cimino and later in Vitorchiano. During one of her sermons, she is said to have emerged unharmed from a pyre, a sign of divine protection.

Death and miracles

Rose died on March 6, 1251, at just 17 years of age. Shortly afterward, her body was exhumed and found miraculously incorrupt. It was transferred to the church of San Damiano, now the Sanctuary of Saint Rose, where it still rests today.Β

Her canonization, begun in 1251 and resumed in 1457 by Pope Callixtus III, was never formally completed, but her cult remains alive and deeply rooted.

The cult and the β€œMacchina di Santa Rosa”

Every year, on September 4, Viterbo celebrates its patron saint with one of Italy’s most spectacular processions: the transport of the Macchina di Santa Rosa, a luminous tower 28 meters high and weighing approximately 5 tons, carried on the shoulders of one hundred β€œFacchini.” It is an act of devotion and civic pride that brings together faith, art, and tradition 1.

A model for young people

Today, Saint Rose is the patron saint of the Franciscan youth, florists, and girls. Pope John Paul II, during his visit to Viterbo in 1984, called her β€œa wonderful young girl” and a β€œmodel for young women,” capable of living out the absolute nature of God through complete self-giving in love.
