Paschal Triduum

Jesus prays in Gethsemane

The Paschal Triduum, rich in rites and celebrations, constitutes the heart of the liturgy for Christians, as it commemorates the essence of faith in Jesus Christ, who died and rose again.
The term “Paschal Triduum” refers to the three days preceding Easter Sunday, during which the passion and death of Christ are commemorated before the resurrection on Easter Day.
According to the Roman Catholic rite, the Triduum begins with Vespers on Holy Thursday and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, and concludes with Vespers on Easter Day.

The principal celebrations are:
• The Evening Mass (Mass of the Lord’s Supper) on Holy Thursday.
• The Liturgical Celebration on Good Friday.
• The Easter Vigil on the night of Holy Saturday.
• The Celebration of Easter on Sunday.

A characteristic of the celebrations of the Triduum is that they are organized as a single liturgy; in fact, the Mass of Coena Domini does not end with the formula “the Mass is ended,” but rather in silence; the liturgical action on Friday does not begin with the usual greeting and sign of the cross and also ends without a greeting, in silence; finally, the solemn vigil begins in silence and finally ends with the greeting. The Paschal Triduum therefore constitutes a single solemnity, the most important of the entire Catholic liturgical year; from the Gloria of the Mass on Thursday until that of the Vigil, the bells must remain liturgically silent; in ancient times, musical instruments also had to remain silent on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, until the Easter Vigil, to better express the penitential nature of these days; for this reason, many compositions by ancient composers for Good Friday were written for choir alone. Today, however, the use of musical instruments during the celebrations of these days is permitted, although only to support the singing.
