“What will become of us after death?” This is how the content of “The Last Things. The Fate of Man after Death” can be summarized. As the author himself says, “it is not a learned and complicated book. It is a text to be read and reread calmly in order to appreciate its content. I did not intend to write a work of theology, but a modest presentation of catechesis. Simple, very simple. With all the clarity of which I was capable, and to which God’s revelation can be reduced without betraying it.” The author, Monsignor Alessandro Maggiolini (d. October 2008), the only Italian bishop on the editorial committee of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, was a prominent figure in the Catholic world because of his “facility with the pen,” which led him to write a large number of texts, including “The Peace of Prayer” and “For Confession,” both also published by Editrice Shalom, but above all because of his uncommon ability to make even the most complex theological topic or the mystery of faith most distant from popular sensibilities simple and engaging.
