Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, made by the skilled hands of Carmelite nuns. The colorful images, joined by a white cord, are sewn directly onto the brown fabric “scapular.” For over seven centuries, the faithful have worn the Carmelite Scapular as a sign of Mary’s protection and to obtain, through her intercession, eternal salvation and deliverance from Purgatory. Indeed, tradition tells that on July 16, 1251, Mary appeared radiant before Saint Simon Stock, superior general of the Carmelite Order, and, handing him a scapular, said: “Receive, dearest son, this scapular of your Order, the distinctive sign of my Confraternity, a privilege for you and for all Carmelites. Whoever dies clothed in this garment will not suffer eternal fire; this is a sign of health, salvation in danger, an alliance of peace, and an everlasting covenant.”
