In a hectic world, where notifications and deadlines consume us, a voice from the past resonates with surprising relevance: that of Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373). Far from being a stiff figure in a Gothic stained-glass window, Bridget is a spiritual companion who invites us to look “within, above, beyond”.
Hers was not an escapist spirituality, but one intensely embodied. Mother, noblewoman, lady of the court, widow, tireless pilgrim, and founder of an order, her life was a mosaic of experiences demonstrating that holiness is possible in every state of life.

An extraordinary life, rooted in everyday life

Bridget grows up in luxury, beautiful, educated, and happy in her castle. She marries Ulf, a devout nobleman, and they have 8 children. In their experience, spousal love is combined with intense prayer, meditation on Scripture, and charity toward the poor and the sick. Together they found a small hospital.
Their journey reminds us that the grace of marriage can support spouses on a path to holiness, transforming the family into a true domestic church.
She is summoned to the court of the King of Sweden because of her positive influence and, after her husband’s death, founds a religious order that spreads throughout Europe. Her visions, collected in the Heavenly Revelations, earned her the name “spokeswoman for God”.

Authentic spirituality connected with Purgatory

One of the most fascinating and profound aspects of Saint Bridget’s visions concerns the souls in Purgatory. In her words, these revelations are imbued with tenderness and justice. Bridget does not merely see; she converses with the suffering souls, listens to them, and shares their tears.
Her visions show us that love can still reach those who are being purified. This is not about fueling fear, but about awakening responsibility. The souls in Purgatory are not forgotten, and their purification is a process toward full communion with God.
In her visions, Bridget hears an angel comforting the souls, affirming: “Blessed is the one who, while still living on earth, helps the souls in Purgatory through actions and good works…”.

From the depths, the souls themselves invoked the Lord, asking that, in the name of His infinite mercy and the merits of His Passion, He might instill in the hearts of the clergy feelings of true charity so that, through their “prayers, mortifications, almsgiving, and indulgences applicable for our intercession, we may be helped in our greatest needs.” They also expressed profound gratitude, praying that the Lord would “repay our benefactors a hundredfold, those who bring us more quickly to the abode of your divine light.”
This is the heart of authentic spirituality connected to Purgatory: a call to solidarity between the living and the dead, founded on love and divine mercy.
Every prayer we offer, every act of charity, every small offering can bring consolation to those awaiting full communion with God.

What does Saint Bridget say to us today?

In an age that longs for authenticity, Bridget offers us an audacious, embodied, and prophetic spirituality. She invites us to be ardent witnesses at the heart of everyday life.

Her example encourages us to:
• Speak with God as with a friend, asking questions and seeking answers in prayer and Sacred Scripture.
• Remember that holiness is not perfection, but daily faithfulness in the things of everyday life.
• Do not forget the “invisible”. The souls in Purgatory who ask for remembrance, prayer, and gestures that transcend time
Bridget urges us to live in the present with eternal eyes, making each of our days a bridge between heaven and earth.

Do not limit yourself to admiring her; meet her! Let her example kindle your faith. Pray, hope, love. And remember, as she herself said: “No one is so poor that they cannot offer love”. Your soul, even in prayerful silence, can bring relief to the souls in Purgatory and new strength to the people you love.
From today, your experience with the souls in Purgatory can become an opportunity for intense prayer. Do not forget that your remembrance can be love that sets free!
