7 Objects That Make Demons Tremble: How to Use Them for Protection

Priest holding a cross in his hand

This article is based on a particularly interesting chapter of the book Questions for an Exorcist, which clearly and effectively explores the nature of these spiritual tools and their significance in the fight against evil.

In everyday life, we often feel vulnerable in the face of challenges and difficulties. But what if I told you that there are blessed objects, simple yet powerful, capable of offering tangible protection against dark forces?
Forget amulets and good-luck charms: these are signs of our belonging to God, clear messages not only to the world around us, but above all to the Evil One.
In the book from which this content is taken, you will find even more in-depth explanations, along with other spiritual tools, prayers, and teachings of the Church that help you understand and confront the snares of evil.
Let us discover together these seven β€œtorments” for demons and how they can become precious allies in our lives.

Crucifix of Saint Benedict

The crucifix. More than a symbol, a book of divine wisdom

The crucifix is not a simple religious object, but the β€œmost beautiful, most authentic, most luminous book of the wisdom of God.” It is the torment of demons, the remedy against temptations, the defeat of our rebellious nature, the channel of grace, and the path to heaven. The cross of Jesus is the sign of victory over evil. Demons know that, with the Resurrection, the cross became for them the terrible reminder of divine justice, a symbol of definitive liberation from evil and death. That is why they hate the image of the cross so much.

Holy water

Holy water. Defense and purification against the snares of the Evil One

Holy water plays a fundamental role in liturgical rites, beginning with baptismal sprinkling. The prayer of blessing invokes the Lord to obtain forgiveness of sins, defense against the snares of the Evil One, and divine protection. But the prayer of exorcism over the water goes even further: it asks that every demonic power be put to flight, uprooted, and driven away. It is no coincidence that, in popular speech, two irreconcilable things are said to be like β€œthe devil and holy water.” Holy water is also invoked to heal illnesses, increase divine grace, and protect the homes and places inhabited by the faithful from every impure influence caused by Satan, ensuring peace and health.

Exorcised salt. An ancient sign of purification and healing

Salt has a long history, with a special religious significance for the Jews, so much so that it was present in all sacrifices offered to God. It was attributed medicinal powers, perhaps because of its ability to preserve food. The sacramental formula for blessing salt originates from the miracle of the prophet Elisha, who healed an unhealthy spring by pouring salt into it and praying. As then, so too exorcised salt is a means of healing and purification for those who use it with faith. It is important to remember that this blessing must always be administered by a priest.

Exorcised Oil

Exorcised oil. Flight from demons and health for soul and body

Exorcised oil, used with faith, has the power to drive away the power of demons and their assaults.
But its benefits do not end there: it also benefits the health of the soul and body. Consider the ancient practice of anointing wounds with oil and the power Jesus gave the apostles to heal the sick through the laying on of hands and anointing with oil. A specific property of exorcised oil is to remove afflictions from the body, helping to free it from impurities, sometimes also manifesting through the expulsion of objects during exorcisms.

Medal of Saint Benedict

The Medal of Saint Benedict. Protection against the devil and preparation for a holy death

The origins of the Medal of Saint Benedict are ancient. Pope Benedict XIV designed it in 1742, granting indulgences to those who wear it with faith. On the front, Saint Benedict is depicted with a cross and the Holy Rule, while on the altar, a chalice with a serpent recalls an episode in which the saint exposed an attempt to poison him with the sign of the cross. Around the medal are the words: EIUS IN OBITU NOSTRO PRESENTIA MUNIAMUR (may we be protected by his presence at the hour of our death). On the reverse is the Cross of Saint Benedict with various initials. Numerous beneficial effects are attributed to the medal, including healing and protection against the devil, but it is not a talisman that eliminates life’s trials. It is a sacramental of the Church, a sacred sign that obtains effects through the Church’s prayer. To benefit from it, growing in our faith in God is essential.

Carmelite Scapular

The Carmelite Scapular. The Virgin Mary’s promise of salvation

The scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the garment of the Carmelites, also called the β€œLittle Habit” because of its small size. A great promise made by the Virgin Mary to Saint Simon Stock in 1251 is associated with it: whoever dies wearing this garment will not suffer eternal fire. This is a sign of health, salvation in times of danger, an alliance of peace, and an eternal covenant. However, the promise should not lead one to sin, but rather encourage conversion, trusting in Our Lady’s intercession for those who wear the Little Habit with faith and devotion until death.

Miraculous Medal

The Miraculous Medal: A β€œMarian Microcosm” of Grace and Protection

Among Marian medals, the Miraculous Medal stands out for its extraordinary popularity. Originating from the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Catherine LabourΓ© in 1830, the medal, minted according to the Saint’s instructions, is a β€œMarian microcosm” that recalls the mystery of redemption, the love of the hearts of Jesus and Mary, the mediating role of the Virgin, the mystery of the Church, and the relationship between earth and heaven. Wearing the Medal can be a valuable aid in living in God’s grace and enjoying the protection of the Immaculate Virgin. Reciting the invocation β€œO Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you” daily means taking responsibility for daily prayer and entrusting oneself to the Virgin, the devil’s enemy. Sharing the Medal can help bring the love of Jesus even to the most distant hearts. Let us remember that, like other medals, the Miraculous Medal is not a talisman, but the promise of great graces requires the faithful to embrace the Christian message with humility and perseverance, to pray constantly, and to live consistently.

These seven objects, filled with spiritual meaning and blessings, are not magical formulas, but powerful signs of faith and instruments of protection offered by the Christian tradition. Carrying them with devotion and awareness can strengthen our spiritual life and offer valuable help in the fight against evil.
And if you want to discover much more, read Questions for an Exorcist a book that helps you clarify what the Church teaches about demons, while also offering valuable spiritual advice for living in the freedom of the children of God.
Remember: these objects are signs of faith, not amulets.
