Today, we invite you to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii on May 8, the day when the famous supplication to Our Lady of the Rosary is recited.
The Shrine is one of the most visited centers of Marian devotion in Italy.
Construction began in 1876 at the initiative of its promoter, Bartolo Longo. The work was completed in 1891, but the Shrine was further expanded in 1933-39.
The Shrine has a Latin-cross layout with three naves.
The interior is rich in marble, frescoes, and mosaics, and features 4 majestic pillars supporting the monumental dome, several chapels, and the crypt containing Bartolo Longo’s remains.

The famous painting of Our Lady of the Rosary with the Child is kept on the high altar. It is an ancient canvas, perhaps from the 1600s, adorned with numerous gems and enclosed in a rich bronze frame. The painting, 120 cm high and 100 cm wide, depicts the Madonna seated on a throne with the Child Jesus in her arms. Saint Dominic receives the Rosary from Jesus, while Saint Catherine of Siena receives it from the Virgin’s left hand. Both saints are at the Madonna’s feet.
Next to it are the treasury, which houses precious monstrances, chalices, and other sacred furnishings, and the small museum, where ex votos and objects donated by pilgrims are displayed.

Near the Shrine stands a majestic bell tower, made of gray granite and white marble, 80 m high and adorned with various statues, including four large bronze trumpet-playing angels and an enormous marble depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 6 m high. The bell tower is crowned by a bronze dome topped with a beautiful jeweled cross.
In this beautiful place, the presence of Our Lady of the Rosary becomes real… don’t miss the opportunity to pray to her!
