Heaven is celebrating in November, because this month opens with the solemnity of All Saints, a feast of light and renewed hope whose profound meaning can be understood through a story told by that great man of God, Father Tonino Bello. He recounted that Monsignor Mariano Magrassi, once archbishop of Bari, was in France at the beginning of his pastoral ministry, dictating the Our Father to some girls at an elementary school. He had already dictated, naturally in French, the phrase Β«thy will be doneΒ» and, walking between the desks, noticed that one little girl had not written Β«que ta volontΓ© soit faiteΒ», as she should have, but rather Β«que ta volontΓ© soit fΓͺteΒ», which sounds the same in French. As the girl had written it, however, the sentence took on this meaning: Β«may your will be a feastΒ». His initial impulse to point out the mistake was followed, as if by inspiration, by a feeling of joy that he expressed to the girls, explaining that doing God's will should not be considered submission, but rather welcoming the βcommandments of Godβ into one's personal freedom and thereby reaching joy, the feast.
At this feast of God and with God, we can perhaps grasp the deepest meaning of the solemnity of All Saints and also of the subsequent commemoration of the faithful departed (November 2): the Lord invites us to an endless feast where we can enjoy his love.
May the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Miraculous Medal (November 27) illuminate our steps this month and help us rediscover in our hearts the great hope to which we are called!
