Illness is certainly a difficult reality to live with and face for the person who is ill, but also for the family members who must care for them.
It is like a tsunami that upends routines and habits, sweeping away the ordinary: what was once taken for granted no longer is, and you have to deal with fear, exhaustion, painβ¦
With this article, we would therefore like to offer a short guide that provides help and support for those whose daily role is that of a caregiver, that is, someone who supports and cares for a sick family member.
Be aware that you are not alone: seek support!
Do not make the mistake of thinking that you are alone: when facing life's greatest challenges, it is good to know that others can accompany us on our journey. If you are asked to be strong at home to inspire confidence in the person who is ill, you should know that you can find support from other people to recharge: open up to your family members and friends, or look for a support group with which to share your experiences. Ask for and accept help: recognizing your own limits and allowing others to help you is a sign of wisdom, not weakness!

Take some time for yourself
Caring for a patient also means sacrificing yourself and your personal space, but it remains essential for you, the caregiver, and also for the patient, that you find a way to set aside some time for yourself: this will allow you to βrecharge your batteriesβ and return to your sick family member with more positive energy to share!
Establish a routine
When illness enters a home, the routine is temporarily disrupted, but then, when you begin to βlive togetherβ with the illness, it is good to organize a daily routine that is predictable and useful both for you, the caregiver, and for the patient. This means creating small βritualsβ that mark the moments and provide security and stability for both of you.

Communicate openly with the patient
Words have the power to save, because they mean human connection and life: therefore, maintain open and lively communication with the person you are caring for. Even if the illness may limit their response, the simple act of speaking can be comforting and keep the bond strong.
Set aside time each day for personal prayer
Prayer can be an oasis of comfort and strength: turn to the Rosary or daily Mass, and set aside a moment each day to rest your heart βone-on-oneβ with the Lord.
Document the positive moments
Keep a journal or create a photo album that documents the positive moments, laughter, and small victories along the way. These memories can become a source of inspiration and joy during difficult times.

Be kind to yourself
Caring for someone who is ill is a significant, precious, and difficult commitmentβ¦ Donβt be hard on yourself for a moment of tiredness or a curt response; understand yourself too and be kind, recognizing the good you manage to do day after day.
Plan for the future
As far as possible, plan for the future: for example, develop a long-term care plan or make decisions about care. Careful planning of the various necessary steps can help reduce uncertainty and stress.
The caregiver is a key figure for the patient, but to care for someone with all their heart, caregivers must also think about their own heartβs well-being, so troubled by the illness of the person they love.
For the sake of those you love, donβt forget to take care of yourself!
On this journey of care and assistance, you can draw closer to a saint who made caring for others his lifeβs mission: Saint John of God, founder of the Hospitaller Order known as the βFatebenefratelliβ.
He walked through the streets and squares shouting: βDo good, brothers, for your own sakeβ, by doing good to others.
Let us then do good for ourselves by standing beside the people we love and accompanying them through a part of life that is certainly difficult, but also precious, like every moment of life.

If you would like to share your experience as a caregiver with us, we would be happy to listen. If you find it helpful, we also invite you to seek professional assistance or supportβ¦ Donβt isolate yourself; you are not alone!
