Every life is important: the life blossoming in a woman’s womb, the life nearing the end of its earthly journey, the life of those who face the difficulties of disability every day, and the lives of the world’s most vulnerable, the poor, the marginalized, and migrants.
To remember this and remind ourselves of it, on the first Sunday of February every year, the CEI (Italian Episcopal Conference) promotes the Day for Life, which has been celebrated nationally since 1978. It is an opportunity for prayer and raising awareness about issues related to defending life and supporting motherhood and fatherhood.
Over these past two years, more than ever, we have discovered firsthand how immensely valuable every life is; for this very reason, the Bishops have included in this day, traditionally associated with prayer, commitment, and support for nascent life, the “protection” of every life and support for families.
For reasons related to the pandemic, it will not be possible to organize Masses with children and large-scale events in the dioceses, but every family, every parish, and every prayer group can commit to praying for couples who are struggling to fulfill their desire for a child, for families expecting a child or who have recently experienced the joy of a birth, and for the sick.
Only by placing the human being as such at the center of our communities can we say - the Bishops declare - that “the lesson of the pandemic will not have been wasted.”
Life is one of God’s miracles; let us protect it!
