Fatima: a window of hope for our time

Our Lady of Fatima

There are places and moments in history that seem to tear open the veil of everyday life, offering a glimpse into a deeper reality, an invitation that resonates through the decades. Fatima is one of those places.

That May 13, 1917…

It was May 13, 1917, when, in a small village in Portugal, three children tending their sheep had an extraordinary encounter. Lucia Dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, cousins and friends, saw a flash in the sky, like lightning. But what followed was far more than a natural phenomenon. Near a holm oak, they saw a Lady dressed in white, immersed in a dazzling light, with a rosary in her hands.
Her first words were a balm for the frightened hearts of the children: “Do not be afraid. I will not harm you.” And when Lucia asked where she came from, the answer was simple yet immensely powerful: “I am from heaven.” This announcement directed the lives of the three children toward an ardent longing for that place of light, where they would be able to encounter and contemplate God. From that day on, they longed for heaven not only for themselves, but for every person on earth.
The apparitions continued in the following months, always on the 13th. Through these encounters, the Lady from heaven delivered messages of crucial importance to humanity to the little shepherds. Their fundamental core is a fervent appeal to conversion, prayer, and penance. Like a tender Mother, the Virgin called people back to herself.

A prophecy of hope

But the message of Fatima is above all, and in a powerful way, a prophecy of hope. In an age such as ours, when we often place our hopes in fleeting things like ideologies, wealth, power, vanity, success, beauty, or health - things that deceive and drain us - Fatima reminds us where to find the true anchor. These earthly hopes, based on technological and scientific progress or on our own abilities alone, confuse the mind and heart, weakening life itself and making us incapable of truly loving.
The message of Fatima, as Benedict XVI stated, is “like a window of hope that God opens when man closes the door to Him.” It teaches us that our hope must be placed in what can truly help us live and give meaning to our existence: the desire for God, the ultimate goal of our lives. For what good is it to gain the whole world if one then loses one’s soul? We were created with the capacity to go beyond purely human hope; we need to reclaim hope in the resurrection and eternal life, founded on the resurrection of Christ Himself.

Setting our sights on heaven

To think of the things above, not of those on earth. This is the central invitation. To look toward heaven not as an escape, but as our eternal home and pledge of our future happiness. This requires us to rely not on our own strength alone, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit.
The invitation to hope in the message of Fatima is addressed to every person, to every “poor sinner.” The Most Holy Virgin urges us to fight the battle of our lives in the name of and through the power of God’s love. It is this love that helps us understand what is truly worth fighting for: eternal life, life in its fullness and abundance.
The hope that Fatima teaches us is therefore not a generic optimism, but a theological virtue, a gift received in Baptism, which is trust in God and awareness of our limitations; it enables us to place all our expectations and concerns in Him, making us docile and grateful. Even in times of trial, this hope comforts us and helps us perceive that the only thing that matters is allowing ourselves to be guided by God. It is a virtue for the journey, giving us joy even amid hardship, because we are certain of our destination. A destination so great that it justifies every effort: heaven.

Seeking the things above

Like the young visionaries, who, guided by the cross of Christ, walked toward their eternal homeland, we too are called to seek the things above, where Christ is. Pope Francis, on the centenary of the apparitions, reminded us that we have a Mother in Mary and that our hope rests on Jesus.

Today, as then, the message of Fatima resonates powerfully. In a world struggling after fleeting illusions, Fatima continues to show us the way toward life in its fullness, the true home of our soul.
