Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15, mark the Jubilee of Sport: a solemn occasion in which we are invited to rediscover sport from a new perspective; beyond the roar of the stadiums and the echo of triumphs, sport becomes a sublime stage for the deepest expression of the human soul and faith. It is a journey that goes far beyond the podium, touching spiritual chords that resonate with eternal values and transform athletes into witnesses of hope and resilience.
Faith, hope, resilience
Faith is a companion and a source of strength for many athletes; among the many examples, we mention two very well-known ones: Kaká, the Brazilian footballer who retired from competitive sport in 2017, often dedicated his victories to God, sometimes even wearing shirts that made his faith even more explicit.
Kobe Bryant, the late basketball player who died in a helicopter accident in 2020, deeply nurtured his Catholic faith and testified that it had helped him face the most difficult moment of his life. In 2001, Bryant was accused of rape and sought support in religion to face the situation; at that time, a Catholic priest became his best adviser.
In the face of devastating injuries, the chains of addiction, personal losses, or the most intimate doubts, faith becomes an invincible shield for many athletes, enabling them not only to endure, but to grow in a strength that is both physical and, above all, spiritual. It is faith that grants them the grace to put into practice the gifts that, as they believe, have been entrusted to them by God.
And along this journey, sport becomes a vehicle for values that shine like guiding stars: honesty, solidarity, loyalty, perseverance, selflessness, peace, justice, fortitude, prudence, wisdom, hope; these are not merely abstract principles, but the heartbeat of every fair competition.
Giving your best
Through sport, these values are fully expressed, contributing to the integral development of the human person. The document Giving Your Best from the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life invites us to build a sport that is increasingly human and authentic, in which the commitment to “giving your best” is not merely a pursuit of performance, but a profound expression of being.
Sport and spirituality: an inseparable bond
The Jubilee of Sport 2025 in Rome will therefore be a moving celebration of this inseparable union between sport and spirituality. Events such as “The Impetus of Hope: Stories Beyond the Podium” at the Augustinianum Auditorium, organized by the Dicastery for Culture and Education, will bring together Olympic and Paralympic athletes, academics, and pastoral workers to reflect on the profound bond between hope and sport. It will be an opportunity to meet great champions who will share their experiences at the heart of the Sports Village in Piazza del Popolo, sharing not only skills but also lessons for life.
But the true emotional climax will be the pilgrimage “With the Flame’s Torch”, a symbolic and spiritual journey guided by the Cross of Athletes and the flame of hope, bearing witness to sport’s ability to unite people from different backgrounds. This journey will culminate in passing through the Holy Door in the Vatican, a profound and meaningful act of faith for the Jubilee.
In every drop of sweat, every victory, and every defeat, sport offers a lesson for life. When intertwined with faith, it becomes a powerful hymn to the resilience of the human spirit, an opportunity to recognize the gifts we have received and place them at the service of a greater good. It is a call to live authentically, to aim not only for the top of the podium, but also and above all for inner growth, making sport a journey of hope, unity, and profound spirituality.
Let us therefore commit ourselves, in our daily lives, to being “athletes of the heart,” living these values with conviction.
