June has arrived! For many, it means longer days and vacations on the horizon. But this month carries another meaning as well: it is the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Although this devotion has ancient roots, it received new impetus in the 17th century thanks to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. Jesus himself asked her to spread devotion to his Sacred Heart, the source of infinite love for humanity. From that moment on, Saint Margaret’s mission was to spread a message that places Jesus’ divine and human love at the center.
But why June in particular? Because the feast of the Sacred Heart is often celebrated during this month, usually on the third Friday after Pentecost.
The Heart of Jesus. A Love That Still Speaks Today
Perhaps you think of this devotion as something “old-fashioned.” It is true that its roots run deep, but its message is more relevant than ever in an age marked by individualism and uncertainty.
The Heart of Jesus is the center of Christ’s human person, from which love for every man and woman flows. It is a heart that has known human joys and sorrows, that offered itself for the salvation of all. A heart that continues to beat in unison with ours, capable of understanding, accompanying, and sharing in every beat of the human heart: joy, sorrow, loneliness, success, failure.
It is the great sign of God’s love for every person and of his redeeming mercy. In a world that often forgets the importance of selfless love, devotion to the Sacred Heart reminds us that at the center of our faith is a heart that beats for us, inviting us to love as He loved: unreservedly.
