We have concluded the month dedicated to the Virgin Mary and are beginning the month dedicated to the Heart of Jesus. The heart is a symbol of love. And since Christ had perfect love, his heart is for us the perfect symbol of God’s love; it is the “highest human expression of divine love… Popular piety places great value on symbols, and the Heart of Jesus is the symbol par excellence of God’s mercy; but it is not an imaginary symbol—it is a real symbol, representing the center, the source from which salvation for all humanity has flowed” (Pope Francis).
The solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is preceded by that of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The Eucharist, as Pope Francis emphasizes, is “the Bread for the journey, the Bread of Jesus. If we welcome it with our hearts, this Bread will release the power of love within us: we will feel blessed and loved, and we will want to bless and love, beginning here, in our city.”
The Church also celebrates the liturgical memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary this month. Saint Augustine writes that Mary, “conceiving Christ first in her heart rather than in her womb… believed, and in her what she believed came to pass.” We consecrate our lives to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary so that every thought, every action, and every decision of ours may be in harmony with them; may our hearts beat in unison with theirs.
