The Eucharistic Miracle of Cascia (Italy, 1330)

Eucharistic Miracle of Cascia

Blessed Carlo Acutis had conceived and created a beautiful traveling exhibition on Eucharistic Miracles. This exhibition continues to travel throughout Italy and the world; all the Eucharistic miracles featured in the exhibition have been compiled in the book Eucharistic Miracles in the World, from which this text is taken.

Relic of the Eucharistic miracle.

In 1330, in Cascia (PG), a gravely ill peasant sent for the priest to receive Communion. The priest, partly through carelessness and partly through apathy, instead of taking the ciborium with him to carry the host to the sick man's home, took a host from it and irreverently slipped it into his prayer book. Once he reached the peasant's home, the priest opened the book and was horrified to see that the host had transformed into a clot of blood that had also stained the pages of the book.

In Cascia, in the basilica dedicated to Saint Rita, the relic of a remarkable Eucharistic miracle that occurred near Siena in 1330 is also preserved. A priest was asked to bring Communion to a sick peasant. The priest took a consecrated host, irreverently placed it between the pages of his breviary, and set out for the peasant's home. When he arrived at the sick man's house, after hearing his confession, he opened the book to take the host he had placed there, but to his great surprise he found that the host had turned bright red with blood, to the point of soaking through both pages between which it had been placed. Confused and repentant, the priest immediately went to Siena, to the Augustinian convent, to seek the advice of Father Simone Fidati of Cascia, known to everyone as a holy man. After hearing the account, he granted the priest forgiveness and asked to keep the two bloodstained pages. Numerous Supreme Pontiffs have promoted its veneration by granting indulgences.

The record of the examination of the relic of the Eucharistic miracle of Cascia, conducted in 1687, also includes the text of a very ancient codex from the convent of Sant’Agostino, which describes numerous details concerning the prodigy. In addition to this codex, the episode is also mentioned in the Municipal Statutes of Cascia of 1387, which, among other things, ordered that “every year on the feast of Corpus Christi, the Podestà, the Consuls, and all the people of Cascia were required to gather in the church of Sant’Agostino and follow the clergy, who were to carry that venerable relic of the most sacred body of Christ in procession through the city.” In 1930, on the occasion of the sixth centenary of the event, a Eucharistic Congress was held in Cascia for the entire Diocese of Norcia; it was then that a precious and artistic monstrance was inaugurated and all the historical documentation available on the subject was published.
