The Eucharistic Miracle of Mogoro (Italy, 1604)

Eucharistic Miracle of Mogoro

Blessed Carlo Acutis conceived and created a beautiful traveling exhibition on Eucharistic Miracles. This exhibition continues to tour Italy and the world; all the Eucharistic miracles featured in the exhibition have been collected in the book Eucharistic Miracles in the World, from which this text is taken.

In April 1604, a Eucharistic miracle occurred in Mogoro (OR), described by the historian Pietro M. Cossu.
During Holy Mass, two men in mortal sin dropped two hosts onto the ground, leaving their imprints on the floor.
Because of this prodigious event and in reparation for that sacrilegious act, a solemn Eucharistic procession is held in Mogoro every year on the Sunday following Easter Sunday.

In Mogoro, Sardinia, on Easter Monday in 1604, Don Salvatore Spiga, parish priest of the church of San Bernardino, was celebrating Mass and, after the consecration, began distributing Communion to the faithful. At a certain point, he saw two men also approach to receive Communion, known to everyone for the dissolute lives they led. The priest gave them Communion, and as soon as they received the particles in their mouths, they spat them onto the stone of the altar rail. The two men justified what had happened by saying that the hosts had become as hot as burning coals and had burned their tongues. Then, overcome with remorse for not having confessed beforehand, they ran away. Don Salvatore had the fallen sacred hosts collected and saw that the imprints of the two particles remained in the stone, as if carved into it. He then ordered the stone to be washed thoroughly, hoping that the imprints could be erased. But every attempt failed miserably. Numerous historians, including the priest Pietro Cossu and Father Casu, describe the investigations carried out by the bishop at the time, Monsignor Antonio Surredo, and his successors.

Among the most important documents confirming the miracle is the public deed drawn up by the notary Pedro Antonio Escano on May 25, 1686, by which the rector of Mogoro entered into a contract for the construction of a small gilded wooden shrine on top of the high altar. At its base, the shrine was to contain a cavity to house the “stone of the miracle,” which was to be kept enclosed in a dignified box and positioned so that it could be seen by the faithful. The stone still bears the round imprints of the two hosts.
