Summer has arrived, and every year one of the regions ready to welcome thousands of tourists in the best possible way is Trentino-Alto Adige, a place of breathtaking views and countless possibilities.
The Sanctuary
One of the jewels of Val di Non is undoubtedly the Sanctuary of Saint Romedio (in the municipality of Sanzeno), visited every year by more than 200,000 pilgrims. This “unique” Sanctuary stands on a 70-metre-high limestone crag and consists of five small overlapping churches connected by a long staircase of 131 steps.
To reach the Sanctuary, visitors follow a characteristic path through the rock, very evocative, which prepares the soul for arrival at this place truly rich in spirituality.
San Romedio, between history and legend
The Sanctuary was established thanks to Saint Romedio, a hermit whose tomb the faithful carved into the rock after his death. There are various legends about Saint Romedio, and the best known is undoubtedly the one linked to the episode involving the bear. It is said that the hermit, by then elderly, was heading to Trento on horseback to meet the bishop. The four-legged animal was mauled to death by a bear, which Romedio later managed to tame and ride all the way to the city of Trento.
To commemorate the bond between the hermit saint and the bear, San Romedio is also home to a wildlife area that accommodates bears born in captivity and in need of shelter.
