World Earth Day

World Environment Day reminds us of the importance of protecting our planet and acting to preserve our land and our future. In Laudato si’, Pope Francis emphasizes that “the destruction of the human environment is something very serious, not only because God has entrusted the world to human beings, but also because human life itself is a gift that must be protected from various forms of degradation.”

We must act immediately

This year, World Environment Day is hosted by Saudi Arabia and focuses on three crucial themes:

  1. Land restoration: Up to 40% of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population and threatening around 50% of global GDP. Land restoration is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
  2. Desertification: The number and duration of drought periods have increased by 29% since 2000. Without urgent action, by 2050 drought could affect more than three-quarters of the world’s population.
  3. Drought resilience: Drought is a growing threat. In 2022, Italy reached an all-time low in annual water resource availability, worsened by above-average temperatures. Drought was particularly severe in some areas of the country.
Scientists all agree: “There is no time to lose.”

The words of Pope Francis

In the encyclical Laudato si’, Pope Francis reminds us that “catastrophic predictions can no longer be viewed with disdain and irony. We could leave future generations too many ruins, deserts, and waste. The pace of consumption, waste, and environmental degradation has exceeded the planet’s capacity, so much so that our current way of life, being unsustainable, can only lead to catastrophes, as is already happening periodically in various regions.” The Holy Father reminds us that we must change our lifestyles and our production and consumption patterns. We can no longer put off until tomorrow what we can do today.

We must act now with future generations in mind. What kind of world do we want to leave them?
