In the folds of popular spirituality, among whispered novenas and venerated statues, bonds sometimes blossom that go beyond simple devotion. The relationship between Natuzza Evolo and Saint Francis of Paola is one such case: an intertwining of profound respect and an affectionate, almost everyday familiarity that reveals to us a unique way of living the faith.
In this article, we tell you about two episodes that reveal the disarming intimacy between a mystic of our time and the Calabrian Saint. Simple episodes, yet capable of touching the heart.
A Teacher of Spiritual Life
The first anecdote takes us inside the church of Paravati, where Natuzza, with the spontaneity that characterized her, greets the statue of Saint Francis of Paola with a warm: «I greet you, my friend!». The immediate and unexpected reply comes from a “teacher of spiritual life” - the Saint himself - who gently corrects her: «Natuzza, you see, you make mistakes too! … First you greet the Father and the Mother! … Then your friends! … You must not make a mistake! …».
This apparently simple exchange contains a profound lesson in practical catechesis: the importance of recognizing the proper place to give the Lord, the Mother of God, and the saints, placing the Eucharist and then the Virgin Mary at the center of one’s life of faith, even before one’s heavenly friends. The episode does not diminish Natuzza’s affection for Saint Francis; rather, it highlights his role as a spiritual guide who, with care, contributes to her growth. For her part, Natuzza would always maintain a devout faithfulness to the Saint of Paola.
A Strong and Authentic Spiritual Friendship
Another testimony to this special bond emerges in an episode involving flowers, again in the church of Paravati. Two women, intent on renewing the floral tribute to the Virgin Mary, lay the now-wilted flowers at the feet of the statue of Saint Francis. The scene does not escape Natuzza’s attention and, disturbed by this gesture, which she perceives as a lack of respect, she prompts the Saint to intervene directly: «Natuzza, be good… it’s all right anyway!…», Saint Francis reassures her, almost as if soothing a child’s unease. But Natuzza’s reaction is vehement and charged with an almost “jealous” affection: «My Saint Francis!… You must not be treated like that! … Your flowers must be fresh! … Either fresh or nothing! … Because you’re my friend! …».
This passionate response highlights the depth of her feelings, a friendship that drives her to defend Saint Francis fervently and demand the utmost respect for him. The episode concludes with Natuzza’s “justified reproaches” toward the two women, who were admonished to show greater delicacy toward “Natuzza’s friend.”
These small episodes help us sense something of Natuzza’s inner world: a humble woman, deeply rooted in God, capable of living her faith as a daily dialogue with heaven.
Those who knew her speak of a maternal and luminous presence, capable of listening and comforting, with a spirituality embodied in everyday life.
An intense and personal spirituality
These episodes, in their apparent simplicity, offer us an authentic glimpse into Natuzza’s vivid and personal spirituality. Her relationship with Saint Francis of Paola is not limited to formal prayers, but consists of an intimate dialogue and sincere affection, which shine through in a spontaneous greeting or in her passionate defense of a floral offering. Far from being irreverent, this familiarity seems to represent a profoundly human way of living one’s faith, a bridge between heaven and earth built on a strong and authentic spiritual friendship.
Saint Francis of Paola thus emerges not only as a saint to be venerated, but as a companion on the spiritual journey, capable of offering guidance and comfort while accepting and returning the affection of his devoted “friend” Natuzza.
If you would like to learn more about Natuzza, her inner life, her hidden mission, and her gift for others, we recommend the book “Natuzza Evolo. A Mother to Everyone,” written by Monsignor Giovanni D’Ercole, her spiritual son.
This is not a traditional biography, but a vivid and heartfelt portrait that lets us enter the heart of a simple yet extraordinary woman, a witness to God’s love among ordinary people.
