There are stories that defy the laws of nature and time, lives as brief as the passage of a comet yet capable of leaving a trail of light that shines for centuries. That of Saint Rose of Viterbo is not merely the story of a young woman who lived in the thirteenth century; it is the account of an extraordinary strength contained in an incredibly fragile body, of a visceral love for Christ that was stopped neither by illness, rejection, nor exile. In a complex era full of challenges like ours, the testimony of this young Franciscan tertiary speaks once again to the hearts of the faithful, reminding us how divine Grace can work wonders precisely through what the world considers weak.
In brief
Saint Rose of Viterbo (1233-1251) was a young Franciscan tertiary who, despite suffering from a serious congenital malformation, transformed her fragility into a powerful mission of faith, charity, and peace. Known for her incorrupt body and for the celebrated Macchina di Santa Rosa held every September in Viterbo, she represents a luminous example of Christian hope. Editrice Shalom preserves her memory with the new "Novena to Saint Rose", a spiritual journey guided in five steps.
Fragility that became courage: Rose's youth
Born in 1233 in Viterbo to a family of humble means, Rose came into the world with what seemed to be a medical sentence already written: a serious anatomical malformation, namely the complete absence of the sternum. Given the medical knowledge of the time, a child in such a condition should have died within just a few years. Yet Rose lived for eighteen intense years, facing suffering not with resignation, but while constantly maintaining a serene and radiant smile on her face.
That same physical infirmity initially prevented her from fulfilling her great desire: being welcomed into the monastery of the Poor Clares, who could not accept her because of her precarious health. However, Rose did not close herself off in the pain of exclusion. She chose to wear the habit of the Third Order of Saint Francis and made the streets of Viterbo her open-air cloister. With a simple crucifix around her neck, she walked through the neighborhoods of her city, bringing hope to the poor, relief to the sick, and acting as a peacemaker at a time in history torn apart by fierce political and social clashes between the Guelphs and Ghibellines.

The ardor of her witness and the trial of exile
Despite her very young age, Rose revealed extraordinary spiritual maturity and steadfastness in faith. Her words were penetrating and courageous. Her unwavering stance in defense of the Pope during the dramatic conflicts between the Empire and the Holy See aroused the hostility of the local authorities, eventually leading to her exile in Soriano nel Cimino together with her family.
Not even distance from her homeland and the hardships of exile managed to diminish her apostolic ardor. Her lamp continued to burn with undiminished intensity until her premature death in June 1251. Rose left this world at just eighteen years of age, but her earthly passage had already enriched the Church with an invaluable treasure of holiness.
The mystery of the incorrupt body and centuries-old devotion
The profound bond of love between Saint Rose and the city of Viterbo did not end with her birth into heaven. Tradition holds that Pope Alexander IV saw her repeatedly in dreams and was instructed to transfer her remains to the church of the Poor Clares, the very monastery that had been unable to welcome her during her life.
Rose's body has reached the present day miraculously incorrupt. It even survived a devastating fire that broke out in 1357, leaving her limbs untouched. Even today, pilgrims can venerate her inside the Sanctuary dedicated to her in Viterbo, pausing in prayer before a Saint who seems simply to be resting as she awaits the resurrection.
Every year, on the evening of September 3, the city of Viterbo renews its solemn tribute with the procession of the celebrated Macchina di Santa Rosa: an imposing luminous bell tower approximately thirty meters high, carried on the shoulders of more than one hundred porters through the streets of the historic center. This extraordinary expression of faith and popular tradition — recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage — conveys the gratitude and enduring affection of a people for its patron saint.
A journey of prayer: The novena to Saint Rose
To help the faithful rediscover the spiritual depth of this figure and invoke her intercession in times of trial, Editrice Shalom has recently published the new resource "Novena to Saint Rose". This is not simply a booklet of devotional formulas, but a genuine nine-day spiritual journey, designed to establish an intimate and personal dialogue with the young Saint.
A five-step journey: reading, listening, meditating, praying, and living. We are guided by the example of Saint Rose to transform prayer into action and discover how her life still speaks of God today.
The life of Saint Rose is a reminder to all of us not to give up in the face of adversity, to turn our weakness into strength, and to walk, like her, always with a smile, thereby bringing hope to our neighbor.
