In the heart of Umbria, within the walls of CittΓ  di Castello, Saint Veronica Giuliani (born Orsola in 1660 and died in 1727) lived an experience of extraordinary mystical depth. This Capuchin Poor Clare, who received the name Veronica at 17, was not merely a nun, but a β€œliving flame of divine love”.

A spiritual journey of embodied suffering and love

Veronica’s life was a crescendo of mystical phenomena: at 21 she received Jesus’ crown of thorns, and at 37 the stigmata. Her visions and intimate dialogues with Jesus and Mary are documented in a monumental 42-volume Diary comprising more than 22,000 pages. Her mysticism was deeply β€œincarnate”: she did not seek God in distant heavens, but in Christ’s suffering flesh, wishing to share every pain, as expressed in her cry: Β«Lord, crucify me with you!Β».

The burning compassion for the souls in Purgatory

A central aspect of her spirituality was her extraordinary dedication to the souls in Purgatory.Β Veronica voluntarily offered herself as a victim for their liberation for her entire life, asking for new punishments for herself so that they might be relieved of their suffering.Β Her mystical experiences in Purgatory were absolutely extraordinary. These were not physical journeys, but visions in which she served as an instrument of intercession:
β€’ In 1703, she was granted the grace toΒ free thirty-three souls, in honor of the years of Jesus’ earthly life, accepting greater suffering in exchange.
β€’ Between December 3 and 17, 1705,Β offered to suffer for a priest and a laypersonΒ who were in Purgatory. She described horrific punishments, feeling herself β€œtorn apart throughout her whole being... as if in a blazing furnace,” until their liberation through the merits of Jesus’ Passion.

β€’ On February 23-25, 1716, Mary Most Holy showed her a soul that appeared as a β€œmonster” because of its imperfections.Β Veronica offered to suffer in its placeΒ experiencing torments so atrocious that she thought she was going to die. That soul, purified, was then led to Paradise.
Veronica lived immersed in boundless and redemptive love. Her compassion was such that she wrote: β€œIf a soul in Purgatory could return to earth, it would throw itself into a blazing furnace just to avoid those torments.”

A profound message for today

In an age when the very concept of Purgatory seems to be fading into indifference and spirituality is often reduced to something abstract,Β Saint Veronica Giuliani offers us a highly relevant challenge. Her mystical experience reminds us that spirituality is β€œbody, heart, and relationship.” She invites us to rediscover the face of Christ in everyday life, in human frailty, and in love that gives itself without reserve.
Her visions and sufferings are not merely mystical accounts, but also opportunities that urge us to reflect on the value of penance, intercession, and prayer.
Saint Veronica Giuliani is not merely a saint to venerate on July 9: she is a voice that still speaks, calling us to live radically, passionately, and with an authentically embodied faith. Her life is a hymn to God’s infinite love and a powerful reminder of the indispensable role of Mary Most Holy in salvation. Let us reflect on her total dedication and allow ourselves to be inspired by this β€œliving flame of divine love” toΒ a deeper and more compassionate love for everyone, especially those who need our prayer and intercession.
