Saint Agatha: the patron saint of those fighting breast cancer

Saint Agatha

Every year, for more than thirty years, October has been known as Pink Month, dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer. The campaign began in the United States in 1992, but later spread throughout the world, and around 70 countries now participate.
Since then, each country has implemented a series of local initiatives, involving both healthcare facilities and associations, with the sole aim of promoting awareness of the disease and ways to prevent it or detect it early, so that breast cancer can increasingly be diagnosed and treated.
Many women (and, to a lesser extent, men as well) face this disease during their lives. The Church never remains insensitive to the suffering of its children and has identified Saint Agatha as the patron saint of people with breast cancer.
Indeed, everyone who has to face a health problem tries to draw on all their physical resources, but above all their psychological and spiritual resources, to get through such a delicate moment in their life. Patience, courage, hope, and great faith are necessary for those blessed with it... but above all, great strength. The same strength that Saint Agatha demonstrated throughout her life as a woman and a Christian, never bowing her head and fighting until the very end.

A saint, her story

Saint Agatha, who lived in the 3rd century AD, is one of the most venerated martyrs in the Christian tradition. Her story tells of courage and unconditional faith.

It is said that Agatha was born in Catania to a wealthy noble family. Her beauty attracted the attention of the city’s consul, Quintianus, who asked her to marry him. Agatha refused because she had consecrated herself to the Lord with a vow of virginity. After the rejected young man had unsuccessfully exhausted all his means of persuading Agatha to marry him, he denounced her as a Christian. Harshly tortured, Agatha remained steadfast in her resolve even when her breasts were amputated. Thrown into prison, she was miraculously healed by Saint Peter. She died on February 5, 251, following further tortures, under the admiring and edified eyes of her executioners, who were inspired by her heroism.

Saint Agatha and Pink Month

Women affected by breast cancer are often injured physically, but more frequently and profoundly in the emotional and psychological sphere. Surgery and the subsequent treatments that are often necessary require strength and hope.
Precisely to reduce the number of women and men forced to undergo surgery and invasive treatments, it is more important than ever to raise awareness of early diagnosis, which, even in the event of illness, makes it possible to opt for less burdensome surgeries and treatments; early diagnosis also offers a greater chance of recovery.

The month of October was chosen as Breast Cancer Awareness Month for several reasons:

  • to organize a global awareness campaign involving organizations, institutions, and associations; during this month, numerous initiatives are organized, such as events, marathons, conferences, fundraising activities, and information campaigns;
  • pink ribbon: it has become the universal symbol of the fight against breast cancer; during the month of October, this symbol is worn and displayed in various forms to show solidarity with people affected by breast cancer and to support research and prevention;
  • overlap with other celebrations: October is a month when other important days and weeks are observed, such as World Women’s Health Day (October 8) and World Breastfeeding Week (October 1-7). These celebrations provide an opportunity to highlight the importance of women’s health.

Agatha’s resilience, strength, and unconditional faith amid suffering say a great deal about the power of resilience, particularly women’s resilience. We should follow her example and remind ourselves and everyone we love how important it is to take care of ourselves by participating in screening campaigns, staying informed, and supporting initiatives related to Breast Cancer Awareness Month or other initiatives that support research and information about diseases.

Saint Agatha and Breast Cancer Awareness Month: here is how stories from the past can resonate in the present and provide inspiration. Through awareness, prevention, and mutual support, we can face challenges, whether they involve an illness or other trials in life.

If you are going through a difficult time because of an illness or other problems, we want you to know that you are not alone. If you feel like sharing your thoughts or emotions, we are here to listen and join you in prayer. Always remember, however, that if you need professional support, it is important to seek it.
