There is a name that resonates with the sweetness and strength of a mother’s embrace: Mamma Rosa. Eurosia Fabris Barban, a woman who lived in the 20th century, appears to us not as a distant figure from the past, but as a luminous star of tenderness and courage; her entirely ordinary yet extraordinary life continues to speak to the hearts of today’s men and women.
A “scent of home” that transcends the boundaries of time and space
Mamma Rosa’s life was a hymn to motherhood in its purest and most universal forms. She was an adoptive and biological mother, a foster mother, and a caregiver to the sick and those with infectious diseases, transforming every setting into a welcoming home: from the stable to the apron filled with food for the poor, from the room where she taught sewing lessons to the children she taught catechism with the words of Jesus. She teaches us that a true home is not a physical place, but a state of the soul that expands through acts of love.
A path to holiness in marriage and motherhood
Her first heroic act of charity came when, at just 19, she chose to marry Carlo Barban, a widower with two young daughters, Chiara Angela and Italia, aged 14 and 3 months, who had been left motherless. It was a choice inspired by the love of God and freely embraced, prompted by profound merciful compassion and the desire not to leave the girls without a family. Later, she also welcomed the three children of her niece Sabina, who were left without a mother while their father was at the front during the First World War, caring for them as if they were her own children. These experiences show that love knows no blood barriers, but is nourished by pure and unconditional self-giving.
