At a time when politics often seems trapped between polarization and partisan interests, an initiative emerges that invites us to look beyond and dream big: the Jubilee of Rulers 2025.
From June 20 to 22, 2025, rulers and representatives of civil institutions will be called to an extraordinarily important gathering, not only religious, but profoundly civic and human. As the title itself says, it is an opportunity for “responsibility and hope,” a time to reflect on the most authentic meaning of service to the common good.
But what exactly is it?
This Jubilee is not simply a gathering. It is a moment to pause, a precious opportunity to realign the actions of those who hold power with the fundamental principles of human dignity and social justice. In a fast-moving world, how easy is it for a politician to lose their way amid the pressure of daily decisions and compromises?
The Jubilee presents itself as a compass, a universal guide that, while drawing on Christian values, speaks to the conscience of every person, believer or not.
An illuminating decalogue
The Decalogue of the Ideal Politician by Monsignor Bruno Forte can help us outline the guidelines for a reflection that should reach everyone; a text that extends “invitations, exhortations, challenges and provocations” to those committed to serving the common good.
Monsignor Forte reminds us that a true politician must flee from selfishness, that turning inward which prevents one from daring to do something new and beautiful for the community. Instead, they are invited to choose the path of active patience, to not give in to failures and to work boldly, generously, intelligently and creatively for a fairer and more beautiful life for everyone. A crucial point in his decalogue is love for the common good, which must prevail over every personal or partisan interest, always obeying the truth and refusing to be guided by prejudice. Furthermore, those with governmental responsibilities should consider the needs of the poor as their rights and regard the entire world as everyone’s home, protecting the environment and welcoming foreigners, guaranteeing their rights and educating them about the duties of civil coexistence.
Three pillars for wise politics
Monsignor Bruno Forte has also highlighted three key dimensions that this Jubilee intends to explore, pillars for politics that is truly at the service of people and the planet:
• Ecology: protecting creation is a duty that transcends ideologies, placing sustainability and respect for the earth at the center of political action.
• Justice: true leadership is measured by the justice it delivers, and a fair redistribution of resources is a sign of good governance. Monsignor Forte’s Decalogue urges us always to seek equity, asking more sacrifices of those who have more and offering greater support to those who have less, defending the weakest and giving a voice to those who have none.
• Conversion: the Jubilee is a call to authentic renewal, suggesting that politics, when practiced conscientiously, can become a powerful instrument of change and peace.
The Jubilee of Rulers 2025 aims precisely to be that space for dialogue and encounter where we can rediscover the deepest meaning of a commitment that is a vocation. It is an invitation to leaders to be “builders of bridges,” to choose the good of the community above every personal interest, generating in the public sphere the hope that only just and supportive politics can inspire. May it therefore be an opportunity for ethical renewal, for politics that is more human, fairer and truer. Is each of us, as citizens, ready to do our part so that politics, like society, takes on an increasingly beautiful face?
