Through your eyes

From the “landing emergency” to the “coronavirus emergency,” migration has never stopped being at the center of the news. People have continued to move and cross the Mediterranean despite being aware of the pandemic affecting the countries of first arrival as well as the rest of the world. Because those who flee have only one goal: to survive. Angela Caponnetto, a RaiNews24 correspondent, has followed the phenomenon of migration flows in recent years, especially across the Mediterranean. Men, women, and children who decide to set out on a journey to reach Europe. The people encountered on the docks during landings, in reception centers, at sea aboard military and NGO ships, and in villages in Africa thus emerge from the list of numbers and statistics and, through their personal experiences, become witnesses to a universal phenomenon. From children traveling alone to the young Ivorian man thrown against his will onto an inflatable boat and transferred to a reception center in the far north after arriving in Sicily; from the strength and resilience of migrant women to the physical and psychological exhaustion of uniformed men forced to collect what remains of corpses at sea, all the way to that Lampedusan microcosm where people live a reality that seems disconnected from the rest of the world.
