Descrizione

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows in Castelpetroso (Molise) is known as the “Little Italian Lourdes” and is a major destination for national and international pilgrimages. On March 22, 1888, near this small town, on the slopes of Mount Patalecchia, where two young peasant women were working, the Virgin appeared with the dead Jesus at her feet; a few months later, a spring emerged from the ground. From that moment on, numerous pilgrims went to the site of the apparitions to sip some of that water, and the first miracles soon occurred. Count Carlo Acquaderni, the father of a young man who had been miraculously healed, decided to build a sanctuary in Castelpetroso dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. This guide to the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows contains a detailed description of the history, construction, and architecture of one of Italy’s most beloved sanctuaries. The volume is completed and enriched by an entire chapter devoted to the liturgy and prayer.
