He is venerable, a monsignor and bishop, but above all he is a priest: Father Tonino, who continued to be called that even after his episcopal appointment. He truly embodies the figure of the “shepherd with the smell of the sheep”: he has always been a shepherd among the people, for the people.
A builder of peace, he felt a strong commitment to social issues and fought against every form of injustice. He was a man capable of living in his time by sowing and living the “Good News” of the Gospel, and even today he “does not stop helping us, sowing the seed of his Word so that it may reach the good soil that is our heart” (Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi), calling us to recognize the face of Jesus in others, especially in the poor and the least among us.
