Patris Corde. Apostolic letter on the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as patron of the universal Church

Pope Francis’s Apostolic Letter “Patris Corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”) offers an opportunity to turn our gaze to Saint Joseph, whom the Gospels present as Jesus’ father: the one who cared for him, loved him, educated him, protected him and, together with his mother Mary, set him on the path to carrying out the saving work of God the Father. The document offers us a tender and moving reading and description of Saint Joseph that makes him appealing. He is a beloved, tender, obedient, welcoming, courageously creative, hardworking, humble man and father, capable of remaining in the shadows. Pope Francis once again places the exercise and responsibility of fatherhood at the center: the figure of the “father” is indispensable for the harmonious growth and education of children. The hope is that this Letter will strengthen our faith, increase our love for this great Saint, and encourage us to implore his intercession so that we may imitate his virtues and zeal.
